Style: American Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Stony Joe is a Golden Mocha Stout. It is designed like a traditional Milk Stout but without using the typical roasted dark malts. Instead we use a boat load of rich, decadent golden colored English barley, flaked barley, flaked oats, and flaked wheat to give it lush body and smooth sweetness. We then ferment it on Cocoa Nibs and add fresh locally roasted Guatemalan Coffee, directly to the fermenter. We are excited to partner with Redding Roasters Coffee Company of Bethel, CT on this mind bending beer.

I give this beer extra points for its fluid appearance which is a golden tint as opposed to the dark opaque brown usually associated with stouts. The lack of head and minimal lace are disappointing. There is no distinctive smell. The feel is like - well - regular beer: nothing special. This beer would be so much better if it had a creamy head. The taste - it has a distinctive light roast coffee flavor similar to the Mexican Chiapas coffee beans. Overall, it is like a light stout. Very interesting - unique - one of a kind - great mellow flavor.

Pours a one finger white head, that fades quickly leaving no lace. Clear amber color. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Coffe/chocolate nose and taste follows - baked chocolate. Calling this a stout is wrong, it doesn't look, taste or smell like a stout. $2.20 for a 12oz can from Beverage Warehouse Winooski, VT.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on December 18, 2017.

It pours an unfiltered or hazy looking golden yellow underneath a large, lasting frothy white head. Sediments floating about.

The aroma has a cocoa and coffee character with an orange fruitiness behind that and some corn.

The body is about medium and creamy.

I get a creamy, coffee taste with a hint of cocoa and ending with a mildly bitter finish. The sweetness is there for the entire experience.
