Nicely done ESB with notes of toast, breads, and nuts on the malt and an apple/pear like fruitiness from the hops. Nice drinking only comment would be it is not quite as assertive in flavor and character as other ESB's I've had. Drinks more like a a regular bitter although the ABV would place it in ESB range...either way a well executed, better than average version of a beer style that flies under the radar these days it seems.

I will revisit some more of this places offerings after this initial foray into their lineup.

Extra Special Bitter, ABV 5.6%, 47 IBU, SRM 12, 22 oz. The ale was brewed and packed {not packaged, or bottled?} in Minneapolis, MN. Maris Otter Pale Ale malt, English Pale Crystal Malt, English Dark Crystal Malt, English Flaked Barley, UK Target, UK East Kent Golding Hops, English Yeast.

Well, welcome one and all, to my first review of a Northgate beer. Long overdue. Their brewery is open for growler sales, but they have no taproom yet. Their beers are at local bars, but not the ones I visit, apparently. At last, I have a bottle in my possession, prepared to pour it and enjoy…

Clear, amber-hued, under a slim white ring of foam.

Aroma: sweet malty notes first, caramel tones, with lightly floral, spicy hop notes. Right in line for a British ale.

Taste: hops are hitting first, with a citric splash. Toasty, biscuity malts roll in next. Hop bitterness stay on top. Body is light to medium, with a long finish. Bright and delicious. I'm not normally into the ESB style, but this is one that makes the grade.
Thirsty for an ESB? Can't go wrong here.

Serving glass: Poured from can into Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Brownish-orange with good-sized head and decent lacing.

Smell: Very English - biscuit, dark fruit (cherry and plum), tea, and spicy/earthy hop notes.

Taste: Strong English malt body of cherry, biscuit, and tea. More English hops than expected, with spicy, floral and earthy notes. At 50 IBUs, this is a little more bitter than I would desire for the style.

Feel: Excellent mouthfeel. Relatively low carbonation, with a firm medium body perfect for the style. Dry finish.

Overall: Great ESB that really seems like it could have been brewed in England. A slight more balance between malts and hops (maybe lowering the IBUs from 50 to lower 40s) would have made this a contender for best-in-style.

Poured from a growler, drank from a mug. Not as much of a head as I thought it would have, probably me since I poured it from a growler. Nice color, dark amber. I didn't detect any citrusy smells, mostly nutty and earthy. But then I had a drink, and there was the grapefruit but not much pine. Pretty surprised since I was expecting a more balanced, malty beer being that it's labeled as an ESB. It's almost like an entry level IPA, noticeable bitterness, but not displeasing.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a tall pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep and hazy brownish amber with a moderate amount of bubbles. About one finger of off white head that settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: An earthy and toasty aroma with hints of grass, citrus, and caramel malt. Earthy, floral, and spicy hops with hints of grass and slight pine. Citrus hints of lemon and slight orange. Toasted barley malt with hints of caramel, grains, biscuit, cracker, and yeast. A solid balanced aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, an earthy and toasty balanced taste with notes of grass, citrus, and caramel malt. Upfront mix of earthy, floral, and spicy hops with notes of grass and pine. Citrus notes of lemon zest and orange. Bready toasted barley malt with notes of biscuit, grains, caramel, rye, cracker, and yeast. Slight sweet taste of sugar. A pretty solid ESB taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy and smooth with a nicely drying finish.

Overall: A pretty solid take on the English ESB style. Good mix of earthy and spicy hops with the toasty malt notes.

They have pretty much nailed the British ESB thing with this beer: Earthy malt, this is brilliant dark amber, rich, creamy attack. Finish is dry and hoppy, nose – earthy hops, effervescent, above average carbonation, gives it a moussey quality, nice bitter emphasis on the end.

Had this on tap recently. I like it a lot. Its not a super traditional ESB as it is a little more hopped up, but its not into IPA territory. Overall I'd buy it again.
