Collaboration with Ork Posters to celebrate the opening of their new retail shop, Neighborly: a new home goods shop on Montrose Avenue.

Batch #6.

Dark brown when poured, black in the glass. A two finger head of light tan foam rises and falls, leaving behind a spindly web of lace. Head retention could be better, but it looks nice enough.

Smooth roasted black malts lending some coffee and bakers chocolate to the aroma.

Flavors of dry ashy roasted malt, coffee and unsweetened dark chocolate emerge again. Dry with a little bit of hop bitterness in the back. Finishes smoothly, clean and dry. Light to just under medium bodied, smooth with finely textured carbonation. Overall it's a nice stout, better than Flannel Pajamas.

Pours seal brown with a solid head of khaki foam that gradually settles into a thin skim. Carbonation can be seen clinging to the glass before sporadically gravitating upward. Aroma smells of rich roasted malt and black coffee with hints of molasses, peat, and smoke. Traces of light, grassy hops peak out as well.

The taste features a surprising, peppery hop bite up front, along with savagely roasted malt (and I mean that in a good way). Hints of dark chocolate emerge in the middle and add some nice nuance to offset the bitterness. A brown sugar sweetness emerges with sufficient warming. Seltzer-like carbonation is way too high and muscles out the subtler aspects of the flavor. In spite of this, the medium-light body is smooth and quite quaffable.

Overall, this is a robust and roasty stout that has a little more bite than I prefer, however it remains quite drinkable nonetheless.

22 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. Handwritten Batch #8 on the side of the bottle. My first beer from Begyle Brewing Co., and a collaboration beer with their neighbors Ork Posters. I picked this bottle up in celebration of these guys making the cover of BeerAdvocate magazine issue #80.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter glass.

A - Pours a dark cola brown, but opaque black in the glass. Less than a finger of bubbly mocha suds disappears about as quickly as it appeared. Some chestnut highlights when held to the light.

S - Smell is of dark malt roast, cold coffee, coffee grounds, and some bittersweet powdery chocolate. A pretty tame aroma, but it hits it's mark.

T - Taste is nice. Cold coffee, bitter malt roast, some char, some cream, and lots of dark bittersweet baker's chocolate. A hint of vanilla creeps out as the beer warms.

M - Goes down smooth and clean, with some dryness and just a hint of powdery bitterness lingering on the palate.

Overall, it isn't packing a ton of flavor or a ton of distinctions from the rest of the pack, but it is a solid classic example of the style. Always a pleasure to try out a new local brewery, and I look forward to having more from Begyle.

Had this on-tap at Bar Pastoral.

This stout drinks easily and goes well with food.
