South of Eleven pours a hazy golden color with a great full, 2-finger off-white head with good retention and lacing. The smell is juicy with ripe citrus, dank pine as well as hint of melon sweetness and a floral component. Another user here on Beer Advocate likened it to drinking Juicy Fruit gum. Pretty spot on! It’s got a good mouthfeel, smooth on the palette finishing a bit hoppy but dry. It’s a combination of pineapple, orange marmalade, mango and melon. Doesn’t drink as a beer north of 10% ABV.

16oz can dated 11/28/18.

Pours cloudy gold with an inch of white fluff. Decent retention and lacing. Melons with peach and banana in the nose. Medium bodied with a creamy, fluffy mouthfeel. Lively carbonation. Pithy, resinous citrus on the palate. Melon -forward with grapefruit and zero malt. Finishes dry with lingering citrus and a firm bitterness.

Thanks to Bpfahl for this 16 oz. can, which arrived as an extra yesterday. I need hops. I drink this.

The pour is what passes for an IPA to kids nowadays; I wonder what some would do if handed an old-school West Coast IPA (besides pour it out, I mean). Opaque mango juice with a big tropical nose, without any particular fruit standing out.

South of Eleven = liquefied Juicy Fruit gum. Matching the aroma, I get mostly mango, with a side salad of orange, lemon, citrus, & way too much candied orange sweetness. A hard knock of bitterness on the finish saves the day. Heavy; that might be the ABV, which is otherwise hidden under the layers of fruit. Certainly easy to chomp.

A solid representation of the style, but ultimately it doesn’t rise beyond many other of its brethren. Good beer.

Sample at Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen 2018, Yellow Session. Really hazy golden color. Aroma is juicy and floral with ripe fruits, melon and chamomile notes. Taste is bitter and fruity with orchard fruit notes. A good amount of bitterness on the finish.

Top notch quality pour from draft. Hazy yellow with a small white head. Sweet marmalade and hops mixed and balanced perfectly. Nice high abv here too, Well worth the headache of trying to source this stuff.

1/22/17 can, poured at about 50 degrees. This seems like the bastard child of New England & West Coast DIPAs. 10.2% & 98+ IBU are both essentially completely cloaked. Juice & hops both prominent, neither dominant.

Poured into a Sierra Nevada Spiegelau glass. No freshness date.

A- Pours a hazy medium amber color with a full inch of off-white head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a large side bump of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves large clots behind.

S- Big tropical fruit in the nose provides notes of mango, passionfruit and apricot. Also a bit of a malt sweetness behind it all.

T- Well-balanced flavor reminds me of drinking guava nectar but with more bitterness. Deceivingly smooth for how strong it is. The malt is there just enough to provide proper backing for all the fruit complexity.

M- Has a nice duality of soft feel and moderate hop bite with medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the lighter side.

O- A dangerously drinkable DIPA. My only criticism is I wish it had a bit more dankness to it but that's really just nitpicking. Very tasty stuff for sure.

L - "epitome of hedonistic pleasure"? We'll see about that. Initial pour is a cheerful orangey yellow. It almost glows. Huge head.

S - been catching whiffs of this ever since the can crack. Bright pepino melon. A deeply penetrating dark peach candy juiciness. Sticky dank lemonheads.

T - lots going on here. Tipping back and forth between juicy dank hops and oniony pine. Stringy pineapple, orange jam, and spicy tanginess. Sweaty, meaty, sticky onion resin. Simply dripping. Not much bitterness to speak of, just straight scallion juice. The flavors melt away on the finish, leaving naught but a faint numbness on the gums.

F - perfectly complements the oniony flavors. Smooth and stretched out. Gushing with creaminess.

O - quite good and very flavorful for its high ABV. Drinks like it's in the 8% range. Sinfully delicious flavors and sensations of juice, dank, and raw, earthy hops.

Poured from can into Stone 17 oz snifter
approx 40 - 45 degrees

Beautiful orange/light amber cloudiness ...hazy for days!

Smells of huge tropical notes, candied orange/peach, piney/dank cat p

Tastes like a double tropical breakfast juice, thick and mouth coating with some medium bitterness on the tongue.
Feels like a war in my mouth between tropical fruit and dankness..I dont know who is winning and I dont care!
Creamy as long as it is hazy....for days!!

Smooth 7-8% tasting DIPA
Cant believe this is 10.2 %

wow! i dont like the higher-abv'ed IPAs but this one is much more fruitier and tropical-er than the others i have experienced. the thick chewy malt and sweetness from the higher abv is not as obvious and the tropical fruit undertones deliver adequately....

Poured from a tallboy into a snifter, the beer is a slightly hazed, bright, copper-gold coloring with a low profile, bubbly, clingy, white head. Aromas of lemon zest, apricots, melon, mango, subtle grapefruit, subtle roasted notes, grassy hops, and hints of booze. Flavors are fruity and acidic forward, with juicy notes of lemon, orange, papaya, mango, melon, and subtle pineapple. The hops characteristics are grassy and resinous, but remain as accent pieces instead of dominating the palate. Solid booze overtones, and all of this on a slightly butter and cracker backbone. The body is big and chewy, but slick and crisp at the same time. Tropical fruit aftertaste lingering on well past the dry, bitter, and resinous finish. Good beer!

Pours a murky dark gold with a quick to retreat finger of off white lather that settles to a lasting cap and leaves creamy lace on the glass.

Weed, dark toffee, herbal bitter, bready sweet, other fruit mixed in to make this a wonderful med./full aroma delight.

Wooahh talk about taste not following aroma. This baby opens with the more bitter aspects forming a gentle partnership with melon, mango, citrus pith, peach, crackers and jam, and some nice pine to the rescue at end of sip. As it warms the fruit flavors really come into their own

Soft mouth and gentle carb. are the setting that is this gem's success. Clean flavor presentation, and a nice finish.

What a different and remarkable beer. Highly recommended.

16 oz can poured into snifter canned on 6/12

A: hazy murky amber orange in color and a small creamy white head

S: oranges, apricots, light mangoes a little bit of a grainy oats smell

T: nice mango, apricots, a little cantaloupe and a little bit of alcohol beer is very juicy and fruity

M: light to medium feel a little bit dry on the finish

O: This beer is excellent its so fruity and juicy the only thing that I have bad to say about this beer is that it tastes a lot like hoof hearteds other IPAs which isn't a bad thing but blindfolded I don't think I could tell them a part.

Description: Standard HH cloudiness. Straw-like color with white head and lacing. Big, bold aroma is dank, resinous and piney with a bit of tropical fruit. Taste is consistent with the smell: dank and resinous with just a bit of bitterness on the finish. Flavors all work nicely together and nothing really dominates the beer. For a 10+% ABV the alcohol is well hidden. Feel is smooth with low to medium carbonation.

Suggested food pairing: Grilled fish

If you like this beer then you should also try: Hop JuJu

Overall: 4.25 (This beer is good and I would likely have it again) This reminded me of other HH IPAs (shocker)...but just 'better'. Flavor profile seems a little more complex and balanced and the feel was really nice. Together, this makes for a super drinkable beer that's a cut above most of HH's other offerings.

On tap at the brewpub. Look is pale orange and cloudy. Smell is piles of citrus, orange pith and lemon. Taste is a solid hop punch that lingers, very dry and fruity. So dank and awesome. Feel is amazing and abv hidden very well. Overall this is the new brilliance in dank turbid east coast. Maybe the best IPA I've had in a while

Pours the typical hazy orange of HH brews. Smells delicious- orange juice and marmalade. Taste reflects the juicebomb expectations. This is one of the more balanced HH brews I have had. The ABV is dangerously masked. Overall, one of the more well-rounded HH brews and obviously one of the flagship brews (along with Roller Blabe and Konkey Dong).

South of Eleven is among the best DIPA’s I’ve ever had.

(L) The color is hazy golden, apple juice looking, with a two inch white head.

(A) The aroma is grapefruit and tangerine some pine and dankness.

(T) The taste is of pine, sweet tangerine, pineapple, it’s dank, has a moderate citrus-like bitterness and not the slightest hint of the alcohol.

(F) Well balanced and has a pleasant lingering dank bitterness. It is easy drinking, delicious and dangerous.

16oz can received as an extra, canning date of 3/20/2016.

Opaque, hazy, muted burnt orange/gold elixir, vigorous pour into GFH chalice. 1.5 finger head with thick, crazy bubbles, to thin rim of white foam as the tasting progresses. Thick lacing.

Nice tropical fruits, subtle pine and earth. The fruit aromas tend toward guava, papaya, kiwi, grapefruit, pineapple.

The hops really take over here with a nice, smooth bitterness from front to back. The tropical fruits from the aroma certainly are present if somewhat underneath the hop bitterness, but come through on the backend providing a nice fruity aftertaste.

Medium body, nicely carbonated, alcohol subdued.

Well done DIPA which certainly drinks less than its ABV. I would place this below Blabe and KD but certainly a fine representation of its style.

Any overall review below a 4 is a crime. This beer truly is delicious and does indeed drink more like a 7-8% IPA. The alcohol is hidden nicely but the malt is not overpowering and it has a nice dank/smooth mouth feel. The aromas are a little more intense than the flavors but there is plenty of passion fruit and pineapple to go around. Love it. Put your bathing suit on.

I've had many hazy and juicy IPA's at this point and hold no prejudices. Definitely in support of the sub-style when done right. This beer is very soft and fragrant - looks like papaya juice in the glass, the normal descriptors. Such a disappointment though. Fusel alcohol flavors up the wazoo. Thin and astringent on the back of the palate, and what could have been a beautiful, round hop profile is completely undermined by booze and lack of balance. This is a hop bomb in the worst way, and is far from drinkable. Don't know what people are talking about when they say it drinks like 7%. I've had a couple of hoof hearted beers that were really delicious (dragon saddle was the most successful) but everything else has been disjointed and sloppy

Look - Hazy golden type color. Love the way HH's beers look.
Smell - Tropical fruits like pineapple, citrus, grapefruit, candied oranges
Taste - Candied orange, grapefruit pith, citrus, pineapple
Feel - Where's the 10.2% at?!?!?!?! Dangerously drinkable!

Overall - The best 10+% ABV IPA I've had yet! You can get in big trouble with this one.

Easily one of the better 10+% DIPAs. Lots of citrus on the aroma and palate including orange, tangelo, grapefruit, hints of lemon. Certainly a stronger malt character, but it provides a balance to the hop assault, and the ABV is well masked.

Had in a glass from the most recent canning (3/20/2016).

Look: I have been adamant that looks don't hold a candle when it comes to how the beer tastes. This beer though isn't as opaque as some other hoof beers I have had (Roller Blabe). It is hazy don't get me wrong, but it is orange with a nice white head that disappears. I am digging it.
Smell: I get a lot of citrus from the smell. This beer isn't on the level of Roller Blabe in terms of aroma, but it is a good smelling DIPA.
Taste: Woo hoo! This beer is fantastic. I want to put it on the same level as one of my other favorites Hop Slam, but a bit lower than Heady Topper. This beer has a tone of citrus, orange peel and a bit of sweetness in the back end. The alcohol is covered well until the after taste but it doesn't matter to me. I don't get any off flavors like I have with other hoof beers. It is a juice bomb and one I am digging the more I drink it. I think it adds a great amount of bitterness to counteract the citrus and that in my opinion makes for a fantastic DIPA.
Feel: My thing is, I tend to review off of Heady Topper which is my favorite IPA/DIPA. This beer holds up in that regard. It lingers in your mouth substantially after you drink it. The hops are there but without any off flavors. It coats your mouth and stays there, ready for another sip. This is a great beer.
Overall: This is a top DIPA for me. It is absolutely what I want in a DIPA. A high alcohol citrus bomb. I can't get enough of it. The only issue.... I only got two of the 4-packs I was allotted. STUPID STUPID NATE! Anyway, this batch was perfect. I am proud to say I drank it. Great job Hoof!

Turbid tan orange, with a big, creamy foam head that dissipates to a more bubbly, thin layer. Some random sticky lacing on the glass, but not a ton.

Up front I get aromas of super dank sticky weed combined with bready, yeasty qualities, which is a first but welcome experience for me. I then get a strong essence of longan.

So much weed. Weed tea. While I can't decide between orange and pineapple, marmalade is spot on as hinted at in the teaser description. I had some peanuts in the vicinity while enjoying this brew for the first time, and it kept fooling me into thinking it was in the beer, because it really smelled like PB&J until I left the room. It's gooey, bright fruit jam.

Some sort of tang and spiciness tickles the corners of the back of the throat, yet somehow with all this hop dankness and the unusual tropical notes, it isn't all that bitter.

This is edging out nearly every other Hoof IPA I've had, and the first time I reviewed this was giving the edge to Konkey Dong. I can no longer pretend like the Dong is the winner, SoE is easily the best DIPA coming out of Hoof's stank ass jorts.
