12 oz can. Near black, two finger black head has good retention, leaves rings of sticky lace. Roasted aroma with big hop presence. Roasted malt taste, balanced nicely with bitter hops, dark chocolate bitter finish. Medium silky feel. Very good black IPA.

An amazing balance between hops and malt. With a thick mouth feel and a lingering bitterness in the back of your throat this beer is worth seeking out.

12 oz can was poured into a snifter.

Appearance: A one finger mocha head was poured that reduced to a thin layer. It is a pitch black color with no vision of anything. Frothy lacing down the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Milk chocolate, roasted coffee, earthy, caramel, citrus, leather, and warm alcohol.

Taste: Picking up citrus, banana, strawberry, sweet milk chocolate, roasted, caramel, leather, some ash, and warm boozy alcohol. It almost tastes like a banana split. Super smooth, delicious, and light bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Silky smooth, medium to full bodied, medium carbonation, a little ashy bitterness, and some warm alcohol.

Overall: Got to admit that I have enjoyed this 4 pack more and more is I am finishing up the last of these cans. Will look forward to more of this in the future too.

Pours black with rich tan head; malts are very evident on the nose. The stout is there on the first sip due to malts and it gives way to the hops. It's balanced and truly a "dark arts" beer. Worth a go!

Pours completely pitch black with a slightly tan/off-white head.

Aroma is huge on the juicy tropical fruit side. Mango, pineapple, tangerine, followed by a bit of coffee and chocolate.

Taste is also dominated by the hops first and foremost. Bright citrus, juicy tropical fruit, pineapple, mango, tangerine, grapefruit, peach, sweet orange, slightly piney and resin hop notes show up too. Bit of coffee and chocolate on the back of the palate, but no roasty tasting malts.

Fuller side of medium bodied with a slightly creamy mouthfeel. Completely hidden alcohol, which makes this crazy dangerous! No trace of 11.5% ABV.

Another awesome, juicy Hoof beer even in Black IPA form!

extra tossed my way in a recent can date. been really impressed with all the hoof hearted (who farted) I have tried lately but wasn't looking forward to this as I am not a big fan of black ipas. pours black as you'd imagine. nose is a marvelous floral bouquet of candied hops...heavy on the candied, extremely dessert like in the nose. taste follows suit with a lighthearted sweetened hop that is glazed in roast...and comes across fairly delicious. still not wild a out the style but this is definitely a good black ipa and the Uber candied flavor gives it a really nice unique spin. definitely worth the tick.

12 FL. OZ. can
Served in an oversized wine glass

This beer pours black with two inches of tan head that leaves some nice lacing on the sides of the glass.

The smell is hoppy with herbal and citrus aromas. The roasted malt is in the background with hints of chocolate.

The taste is a good balance of roasted malt and hops. I get the roasted malt flavors up front. The citrus with a focus on grapefruit finishes off the taste.

Full, rich, creamy mouthfeel. Very much like a stout.

The look and mouthfeel of this beer are very much stout-like. The smell and taste are balanced between roasted malt and hoppy IPA characteristics, and the alcohol is hidden. I would never have guessed it was 11.5%. It is a well crafted beer, but black IPA's are not my favorite style. That being said, it is very good.

Poured from a can into a snifter. The beer is black in color with a small light tan head. There is a nice amount of delicate lace.
Aroma of coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt. Some piney notes in the background.
Coffee and chocolate taste. Pine and tobacco. There is a hint of dark fruit.
Very, very nice beer, At times I thought I was drinking a hoppy stout. Also a dangerous beer. The 11.5% ABV is very well-hidden.

12oz. Can poured into a snifter. My second Hoof Hearted beer.

Black as night with a mocao fan fluffy head that sticks around for quite some time. Lacing seems sticky.

Smells of dark roasted malts and bitter hops. Very nice.

Taste mimics the nose. Borders on the line of a hoppy imperial stout.

Soft, low carbonation lets this slide down easily.

Overall a nice, easy drinking knock you on your ass Black IPA. Would definitely have again.

Easily, the best Black IPA I've ever had. Before Cultrider, I never thought anyone could hit all of the notes brewers like to say this beer style is meant to.

Dark brown to black with a tan frothy head that does a magnificent job of redeeming the high hop levels and creating a sublime smoothing effect.

Coffee, chocolate, almond butter and dank peach juice on the nose all transition perfectly on the tongue. This is a totally unique combination I've never had, which is a little odd at first, but then becomes totally seductive. As if that wasn't enough, after a little while, a sudden punch of strawberry hits on the nose, and a little cigar as well.

A lot of these Hoof Hearted beers are first experienced in a hectic, often cold, muddy outdoors environment surrounded by good people, but ultimately, a lot of distractions. A beer with this much nuance really deserves a quiet setting to really appreciate it to its fullest, despite the brewery's over the top Beavis and Butt-Head style branding and reputation.

12 ounce can, no dating on it but I believe this was from a recent release 2 weeks ago. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch tan head that stuck around for a very long time. There's also a good amount of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like citrusy hops (grapefruit, tropical fruit, citrus peel), pine hops, roasted malt, bittersweet chocolate and coffee. I think the taste is pretty much just like the aroma, but there's also some charred/burnt flavor noticeable. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's coating and smooth with a moderate amount of carbonation. I think this is a pretty good brew, definitely worth trying if you're into black IPA's! $12.99 a 4-pack.

Aroma is initially slightly sweet/chocolatey, but becomes dank, resiny, and grapefruit dominant fairly quickly. There's a strong toasted malt presence to accompany roast notes. Very complex.

Flavor reveals a solid chocolatey, roasty malt backbone, with sharp citrus upfront that fades to a dank character mid palate, becoming resiny, earthy bitterness at the finish. Hides the abv incredibly well.

Fresh 12 oz. can poured into snifter.

A= Dark, Dark Brown as you pour but appears near black in the glass. Opaque with a tan foam head that slowly settles into a tan ring around the glass with a few small floating islands of foam.

S= Roasted malts, earthy and citrus rind hops in the background. Smoky chocolate and dark roast coffee.

T= Roasted malts, dark bitter chocolate, black dark roast coffee. Little to no noticeable alcohol.

M= Lower side of Moderate carbonation, full bodied but not thick or syrupy.

O= Incredibly smooth and easy drinking for an 11.5% ABV brew. Nice deep roasty flavors.

Pours black with a thin foamy tan head. The nose is pine and tropical fruit, with a slight touch of coffee. The taste starts out with a good malt presence, but the hops quickly move to the forefront. Pine, citrus, and tropical fruit are the lead players. There is a touch of coffee here as well, but it lacks the notes of deeply roasted malts which many black IPAs have. I find those notes to clash with the hops, and the lack of them makes this very enjoyable. All together, it is a well put together Black IPA and the high ABV is very well hidden and this is dangerously drinkable.

Canned 1/16/2016 enjoyed 1/22/2016 in a stemless wine glass.

Look - Dark brown. Thick medium bubbled head. A lot of lacing. Head is lighter tan.

Smell - Coffee. Chocolate. Musty hops.

Taste - Chocolate is strong. I taste coffee too. It is bitter, but not the hop I am accustomed to.

Feel - Burn on the tongue. Dry. Full.

Overall - 11.5%? Yeah, I can't taste it but can feel it. More like a hoppy porter as opposed to a black IPA. The aftertaste is even complex! We shall call this Mom Dong!

With the brewery's hop follies in full swing, their next endeavor leads them to the "black" IPA at full-on imperial strength. Leading with hops but chased by char, its complex taste and seductive drinkability never reveals its deceptive strength within.

Ominously black and capped with a tall column of mocha-stained froth, the beer's strong aromas of coffee, cocoa and burnt toast is only topped by the bright and juicy perfume of citrus. Its taste of burnt sugars collarize nicely on the tongue preluding to scorched molasses, toast and chocolate that follow closely behind.

But the middle palate shows that those malts waiver and begin to recede quickly, as does in most contemporary IPA, and that allows the taste of grapefruit, orange and pineapple to play a juicy but grilled tasty tune. Its light and creamy taste keeps the taste bittersweet with chocolate while an underlying charred taste is remiss of french-press coffee, roasting walnut and a smoldering ember quality that carries its own bitter earthiness to assist the hops.

Finishing malty-dry and medium-bodied, the hops show their force with the strong piney bitterness that shows a campfire whimsy. The taste and textures of char offer a bitterness that helps the hops to reach a plateau that they wouldn't enjoy without the "black" character. Still, a creamy char gazes over the alcohol and rounds the beer's flavors in a way that only imperial hoppy beer can. A long after-tow of burnt marshmallow and burnt citrus peel lead deep into the next sip.

Pours black in color with a nice khaki colored (or a shade less) head atop of the beer.

Aroma is a musky blend of tangerines and pine. As the beer warms some sweet malt aromas, something toasted or burnt, and plenty more orange citrus shine through. It's smell is absolutely amazing.

The flavor is very complex. Smoked malts, potting soil, alcohol, grapefruit, tangerine, rich sweet dark malts, pine, tropical fruits, mango, more sweet malts, citrus fruit. In that order. The high abv of this beer is hidden extremely well.

Full bodied. Heavy bodied. Whichever you'd like to call it.

Wow. This is my first Hoof Hearted beer, and it's incredibly impressive.
