I wanted to like this beer, partly because I'm still more of a stout than IPA man, but mainly because I was so thoroughly impressed with Cultrider, which is hands down the absolute best Black IPA I've ever had. However, it just wasn't meant to be.

Voltan is blackish brown with a tan head.

Off the nose is where this gets off to an unusual start--green olive, raw pizza dough, and salt brine come to the fore. It's a bit off-putting at first.

As we let it warm it became apparent this beer definitely needs to be kept at warmer temps than it's served at on draft at the new brewpub. A touch of nuttiness comes out and the weird notes mellow out a little bit. Some super bitter roasty, coffee-like notes come through as well.

Ultimately, some novel sips to be sure, but off the mark--which Hoof doesn't shoot for to begin with, but this is just out there.

The beer comes in a black color, pouring dark brow out out of the can.

The aroma hits of nutty coffee, raisin, bittersweet chocolate, a bit of spice, mocha.

The flavor follows with a huge amount of coffee, almost as if there was a coffee addition. Cold brew style wit some mocha sweetness, clean coffee flavor, a bit of nuttiness, a bit of dark fruit, onto dark chocolate candy sweetness. Onto a semi dry roasty finish.

Sensibility in stout now finds imperial status. Without getting lost in its own bigness, the Hoof Hearted team quietly puts out a meek, moderate and simple imperial stout... if there is such a thing.

Voltan comes crawling out of the can, seemingly all by itself. After crowning with a frothy tan cap, the espresso black beer draws in the senses with dark-roast coffee, dark chocolate, wonderfully scorched cream and caramel. Its sultry roasted flavors slather on the front of the tongue with toffee, marshmallow, dark coffee and malted milk candies.

As the tastebuds saturate with the beer's lavish sweetness and roast flavors, those french-press coffee delicacies, malted chocolates, candied walnuts and slightly scorches sugars roll onto the finish with a robust delightfulness. With nuances of dark fruit and spice lurking in the background, hints of cherry, grape and fennel aren't that far away. Trailing with a woodsy hop bitterness, any detectible balance to the char and sweetness seems coffee and cocoa-like.

Full-bodied, robust and creamy, the beer's texture is off brownie batter but is rich like malted milkshake. Warm with alcohol and with a kiss of roast-derived astringency and, the beer balances with grilled fruit and a hint of robust red wine with a long aftertaste of dark chocolate and coffee.
