A: Pale straw yellow, with a good amount of pure white head on top. The head dissipates a bit, but even dissipated there is a full 2 fingers. Perhaps only the slightest amount of haze.

S: Pilsner malt, and freshly baked bread. There is a touch of fruitness to it, as well as a subtle floral aroma, perhaps moving slightly towards herbal. The aroma is subtle, yet inviting.

T: Slightly herbal, nice pilsner malt flavor, there is a touch of freshly baked bread. The finish is floral with a little herbal flavor holding out until the end.

M: Light body, good carbonation, and the finish has a nice lingering herbal bite, giving the beer a weightier feel.

O: Overall this is a damn fine Pilsner. Good for a nice summer day, or whenever you want to have a couple beers, and relax. Nothing crazy, just a good, solid brew. I'd drink this anytime.

Smartmouth Brewing Co. "Alter Ego"
12 fl. oz. can, "CANNED ON 04/19/17" and sampled on 05/01/17
$2.29 @ Total Wine & More, Virginia Beach, VA

Notes via stream of consciousness: First off, let me ask you Total Wine & More, why did this can of pilsner at just 4.8% ABV cost me more than a 6.2% ABV Belgian-style saison from the same brewery? That doesn't make any sense... same store, same order. And it's not like their was a price increase, or at least I hope there wasn't, because the cheaper saison was fresher than this one. Ugh. Anyway, it looks pretty good: hazy yellow gold body beneath a finger-thick head of bright white. The aroma suggests sweetish grainy malt and floral, herbal, and lightly grassy hops. The flavor follows. It's clean, fairly well balanced by a firm bitterness, and easy to drink. It's a little sweetish at the outset but it still finishes mostly dry. I'm OK with that, it's a refreshing, easy to drink beer, but it's not what I think of as a "German-style lager". There's not enough bitterness, and there's not enough hop flavor or aroma - especially for the north German style. You might find something like this in the south, but even with the sweetish malt balance you'd still have more hops in play. At least in my experience that is. Looking back the head has dropped but it's left some fine lacing behind. Medium to medium-light in body and crisp with a standard carbonation. I know they make a Sommer Fling hefeweizen, which is nice, but I think this would do just as well in the heat.

Served on tap at Smartmouth Brewing Company. Pours a nice frothy yellow with good carbonation and a solid Pilsener malt aroma. Taste is crisp, dry, and slightly medicinal. Overall, a solid offering.

Mellow. Good beer on a hot summer day. Slightly sweet. Gentle touch of malt and yeast.

Poured a light golden body with fizzy two finger carbonated head that dies quick without lace. The aroma is airy and light, with notes of grains and bitter hops. Beer is light bodied and smooth and actually hits a good balance between a dry, bitter hop taste that has a crisp finish and some sweetness from pils malt. A light and refreshing pils that is enjoyable to kick back with.

Poured from a 12oz can into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint glass. Canned on 04/21/17 on bottom of can.

A: Slightly hazy straw yellow with 1-2 fingers of foamy white head with decent retention and nice lacing. Downgraded for the haze which should not be there.

S: Bready pils maltiness with lemony, herbal, spicy hop aromas, lightly grassy, with a hint of sulfur

T: Really nice flavor that starts a bit sweet pils malty but low-to-moderate bitterness comes through and delicious hops flavors of floral, herbal, slight spicy, and lemon provide excellent counterbalance. There is another flash of malty breadiness in the finish and a hint of mineral-sulfur in the finish as well. Not quite bitter enough for German Pilsner, probably a bit too much for Helles. Clean with no off-yeast flavors or aromas.

M: Light-bodied with high carbonation and crisp dry finish.

O: Enjoyable lager than needs about 8-10 more IBUs to be a German pilsner and about 5-6 less to be a Helles. Still delicious and a good summer pick.

On tap at the tasting room in Norfolk, VA. IBU listed at 26 on the board description.

A-Pours a bright, only slightly hazy straw, golden yellow. A fluffy 2 finger head settles on top of the beer. Great carbonation, the bubbles never stop moving in this one.

S-Smells light, herbal and grassy. Undertone of cracker and biscuit in the nose.

T-Follows the nose well. Refreshing, goes down smooth but with only a very slight herbal dry bitterness in the back end to keep the palette clean. Grassy hops are subdued, however mix well with the subtle breadiness to form a fantastic drinking beer.

M-Crisp, dry, refreshing, this beer will be a perfect introduction into the warmer spring months. Perfect for a backyard BBQ or an easy day spent on the porch with the sun shining.

O-Very impressive. As far as I know, the only lager that's being brewed in the Tidewater region, and it's a home run for me. Hope they plan to keep it around for a while.
