Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
With its pungent and dank hop flavor, 51/50 IPA isn't for those looking for a "balanced" beer. Classic San Diego style IPA with minimal malt flavor so the hops shine through. Why call it 51/50? Because we have to be crazy to put this amount of hops in a beer.

12 ounce can poured into a tulip glass, canned 12/14/15, 16 days old for this review.

A: Pours a very clear honey orange color with a bright white head, head lasted about 3-4 minutes, lots of carbonation, looks a little thin.

A: Papaya, guava, garlic/onion, hints of citrus like grapefruit, hint of malts, no alcohol on the nose.

T: Guava, garlic/onion, hit of citrus bitterness in the middle, grapefruit peel, hint of malts sweetness on the backend, finish is very dry, like sucking on grapefruit peels, some resin and pine, very tasty.

M: A little light, I would like to have some more body on this beer, very dry finish, after two glasses I have that raked palate feeling.

O: Pretty solid IPA, lacks a little body, but overall love the guava and garlic/onion with grapefruit peel flavors, also just released in six-pack cans which is great because I'm not a big fan of 22 ounce bottles.

Nice white head. Less aroma than say Deschutes Fresh Squeezed or Stone IPA.

Poured from 22 oz brown bottle into a clear glass tulip. No obvious freshness date.

A: Clear honey gold with 1-finger sticky, off-white head with decent retention and a scraggly strip of lacing.

S: Mainly herbal, honeysuckle, and grapefruit aromas on a fairly dense medium caramel sweetness.

T: Flavor is dominated by straight, blunt bitterness, big resin blast with honeysuckle notes and raw without much nuance. Too much caramel for me makes it sticky.

M: Tacky and sticky with medium body.

O: A very stiff IPA with a lot if raw bitterness but not a lot of finesse.

This IPA was solid all around. It wasn't the best or the worst, but it was drinkable, and I didn't want to put it down. It has a great bitterness, and just enough malt character to smooth out the bitterness. I pick up pineapple at the start, and a bitter grapefruit in the end.
