Pours a really lovely amber color with just a bit of head that mostly disappears.

The smell is totally captivating, with an earthy, herbal presence that is both sweet and spiced, and remarkably complex. There is sweet honey and the rosemary comes on fairly well too, as do other faintly spicy notes. I could smell this beer all day, and I totally expected it to be a sweet saison or something like that.

But this is an example of a beer where what you smell and what you taste are wildly different experiences. The slight earthiness of the honey remains but all the sweetness goes out the window. This is a dry, dry beer that has neither the bitterness of a pilsner nor the malty balance of any other kind of lager or saison I've tried. The grassy, herbal flavor is still there, but more as a slight presence than a true flavor. Finish off with a light, and lightly carbonated body and this is a beer that can be characterized almost as much by its presences as by its lack thereof.

I think the Brothers Alstöm hit the nail on the head - this beer NEEDS to be paired with food or it will be too dry for you to maintain any interest in its own mild flavor. I had i paired with Spanish tapas and the dish ranges from savor to sweet influenced the beer's flavor quite nicely, bringing out the more subtle sweet and herbal qualities of the beer. I had a similar reaction to this beer as I did the only other spanish artisanal beer I've had, and I'm not sure how many I'll keep trying before I decide that the style is too bland for me, but it does have its time and place, so I'll keep exploring.

Minimal head that turn to the faintest ring fairly quickly. Darker orange, fairly cloudy. Smell is intense Rosemary, which isn't a very intense smell, so it's quite soothing. Nose carries over into the taste, with a great amount of citrus shining through the rosemary. Just a very very pleasant beer to enjoy live in Grenada, Spain.

750 ml bottle, no bottled on or best by date listed anywhere. La Socarrada Cervesa Artesanal Premium. 'Crafted in Spain', 'Ale brewed with rosemary and rosemary honey'. 6.00% abv listed on the label.

Poured into a Duvel tulip glass.

A - It pours a nice burnt sienna orange body, not too much unlike that of an IPA with lots of powdery dark flecks of sediment lurking in the glass. A finger or so of thick frothy off-white head that stays for a while and leaves good fluffy lacing.

S - The herbal rosemary spice is very distinct, authentic, and noticeable. Other spice rack aromas come to mind: oregano, thyme, basil. Some standard bready "beer" malts make an appearance.

T - Taste follows the nose: sweetened from the rosemary honey, with good herbal / spice rack content noted. A bready, almost pilsner malt flavor seems to poke through also. The soft sweetness from the rosemary honey builds as it drinks on.

M - The feel is smooth, creamy, & fluid. Herbal rosemary spice rack notes linger. Soft bready malts. Honey sweetness. Medium-bodied with nice carbonation.

Overall, a unique and interesting ale, unlike anything I've drank yet, and after nearly 1500 beer reviews, it's a treat to still find something fresh and interesting.

La Socarrada Cervesa Artesanal Premium -----4/5.
