Brewed with Six different types of malted barley, Belgian candied syrup and Belgian yeast.
6.9% ABV, 20 IBU
Pours out to a clear deep mahogany, forming a tall creamy yellow head with superior retention and beautiful lacing. Moderate strong carbonation, ~3.2 carbs or so. The nose is clean, with belgian phenolics, toast and the suggestion of brown bananas. The mouthfeel is crisp and clean with a medium body. The taste is a recap of the nose. Spicy phenolics, brown bananas, belgian candi syrup, with a well balanced bitterness, finishing slightly dry, leaving enough bitterness that you want to drink more. Toast and dark fruit lingers in the aftertaste.
This is an excellent blegian dubble. True to style, without any faults. I would gladly drink it again. Excellent!

This one was clear until the final ounce deposited yeast sediment. The beer has a new-penny-copper hue. A loose, off-white head is short lived, leaving a webbing of lace in its wake. Through the walls of a Pretentious Glass Company American Lager pint, one can see no visible carbonation.
The aroma is filled with malt with mild caramel. Sweet candy sugar gives way to late astringent soapiness.
Astringency unfortunately fills the flavor profile from the beginning. Toasted malt and light sweetness are overwhelmed by bitterness that continues to build into a modest finish.
Alcohol seems lower than 6.9% suggested. Carbonation is soft and well below style expectations. It has a light to medium body and a texture reminiscent of nylon. The finish is a bit dry.
This one needs some work. Fortunately, there is a good football game to distract from my disappointment.

One of my favorites due to the name, color and crispness.

Can from Rishi’s. Thank you!! Demonstrates why dubbels are tricky. Lacks head and Belgian kick.

Very malty and delicious but lacking in much complexity. This is one of my favorite styles. It's not as good as some of the imports available but like it and I like that it's from Michigan.

Got this in can form from a local shop in Grand Rapids. Served in a goblet.
A: Pours a clear copper brown color with basically no head and bits of cream lacing.
S: Smells of plums, raisins and other dark fruits, malts, wheat, yeast
T: Toasty and malty, can’t really feel the alcohol, plums and dark fruits, but honestly this tastes like any good dubbel I’ve had, mixed with water.
M: Medium bodied I guess, medium carbonation, pretty watered down for a dubbel, it’s smooth drinking but it shouldn’t be for this style.
O: It was an okay dubbel, but it really was watered down and I’m stuck with 5 more, which I’ll drink but it really strikes me more as a brown ale with a Belgian hint to it as opposed to an actual dubbel. Support local, I’d recommend a try but my opinion is my opinion.

Purchased in beautiful Pentwater, Michigan, this copy of Horny Monk was canned 13 months ago. It has 22,735 ratings on UnTappd, making this dubbel Petoskey's flagship and, probably, cash cow... an unusual combination, particularly so given its name.
But I had this with a medley of late summer (actually early harvest) fare at dinner and, I can say, this Monk is very versatile.
While it has a pretty amber, it Looks clear like a Marzen. Smells also are mostly malt and Tastes are balanced only with the hops having presence in the finish. Medium-mouthed, Monk sits comfortably in my mouth.
My first from Petoskey, I went on their website and see that they renovated a 120 year old building that had started as a brewery but had not been one for almost nine decades. Why they renovated was the pure water source from northern Michigan. For such dedication and making brewing progress for almost a decade, I give them pretty good Overall Hugs... especially for producing the food-friendly Monk.

Nice dubbel, easy drinking and tasty. Not sure how Belgian it actually tastes like but it’s at least a good approximation. Poured gold tinted brown with short khaki head and sparse lacing. Aroma was mild, very mild, so no clues for me there.
The taste was not mild, it’s full and sweet and malty, visions of sugar plums and raisins and dates danced through my head.
The feel was good, nice for the style.
Yeah, I’d drink this again, but think it might be better on tap if I can find it.

Pours a delightful translucent caramel. About a finger of head that reduces to a nice white ring leaving stringy lacing. Smell is honey, brown sugar, roasted malt and toasted grains. Taste follows suit and is very well balanced amongst all the flavors. Feel is full and velvety but a crisp finish. Very refreshing.
