I have been to the Rat a few times over the last few years. It usually ends up being the late night spot for me and the Brits when attending Borfets/De Molen fest. Very small local bar. Lot's of Belgian staples in bottles (Trappists, Rodenbach La Chouffe ect). A few nice local beers on tap. I had a excellent local dutch smoked double bock on my last visit. The key to this place is the lambic selection. The owner loves lambic and he has a special list of vintage bottles. This is not on the regular beer list. You pretty much have to ask about it. I have had DF St Valentine's Gueuze, 1996 Hansens Oude Gueuze, Oude Beersel from a bladder, Armand's Spirit and De Cam Kriek just to give some examples. I didn't notice any Cantillon but all other lambic producers were represented. Best lambic list in the Netherlands as far as I can tell. No food but the owner was happy to suggest takeaway restaurants near by.

Over all I love this place. The only downside is the size. It gets crowded. But it seems like it is a real local place. Regular Dutch people drinking there. Not so beer geeky. I like that a lot. Everyone was very friendly. The owner and staff have always been great. Very Anglo-friendly. It's funny this place has become my go to bar in Utrecht when at Borfets.

Highly recommended. Especially if you are in Utrecht looking for something sour to sip on.

Apparently according to Facebook they started carrying Struise and Kernel beers since my last visit.. Giddy yup!

Derat was the third, and final, stop on my whirlwind tour of Utrecht on 25SEP16.

It's a very comfy, cozy place, found in a large, stone, corner building not far from the city center. Enter right at the corner of the building off the street. The room is pretty much square in shape, and the bar is a bit to the rear and left of the room. Filling out the room are a number of small tables and chairs, all very crowded together. There is some dark paneling on the lower walls, but they are mostly a light mustard color. You'll find a thick mix of beer placards, old photos and chalkboards adorning these walls. The ceiling has heavy wooden dark beams, and the bar itself is also old, weathered, dark wood. The bar-back is an ornate mix of cabinets and shelves, loaded with bottles of liquor. Their beer selection was solid, with many familiar Dutch/Belgian products, though with a few rarities thrown in. The bartender was more than solid, with lots of tips and help, plus a nice smile! Seemed to be a lot of quirky old regulars in here; my kind of place! Prosit!!

I've been a couple times, mainly because they announce the arrival of rare or highly sought-after beers on social media. Besides the ever changing selection of these beers, which sell out quite fast unfortunately, they also have a pretty extensive list of bottles that they do a pretty good job of keeping stocked. The selection is mainly Dutch and Belgian specialties across many styles; always plenty to choose from, and always top-notch quality.
The cafe is quite small inside, but has a really nice old cafe vibe with a very friendly staff. Fairly local place, and usually crowded, but well worth it. This is my favourite place for a good beer in Utrecht!

Cozy fun local's bar that was more than helpful in accommodating this American tourist in tasting the best the Netherlands has to offer. Great selection of Dutch and Belgian beers, and an impressive Lambic list. Super friendly and knowledgeable staff. Went back several times during my weeklong stay!
