Pours into an imperial nonic a deep rich amber with a large billowing off white head atop that settles very slowly into a frothy mass.Caramel and nut stand out most in the nose wich isn't bad but this is a red ipa right? Some floral hops are there with the malts but the highlights of the aroma profile is the malts.Thankfully the hops play a bigger role on the palate, some grapefruit rind and earth intertwined with a dryer slightly roasted maltiness with a hint of buttery caramel as I drink more.Ok this is better than the other Helm's beer I drank a few minutes ago.

This was my favorite on my trip to San Diego. It's the best of both worlds between an IPA and a Red. Lots of sweet and caramel hints at first and then finishes hoppy

Notes taken on 06/29/2014

A: Dark crimsoned body with real fine conditioning to it giving a crystal clear appearance. Each pour produces a massive cake of dark tan foam above that seems to hang forever refusing to subside. Looks smooth and classy with some light etchings of stick left behind on the glass.

S: Toasted caramel malt biscuit up front with some light chocolate Rasinete like presence behind it. I get a few underpins of classic orange and pine hops as well. Smells pretty true to the American style with a good mix of malt biscuit and hops.

T: Dark malt biscuit and toffee imbues followed by some chocolate covered raisin, orange peel, and a flash of forest greens that follow suit. Has a fairly big biting bitterness to it and some moderate amounts of alcohol that make their presence known. Leads into a dry resinous finish with a kick of spicy hops. A rather nice American Red with big malt and hops profiled.

M: Creamy texture gives a lighter perceived feel to an otherwise hefty malt filling body. Has some constricting bitterness that segues into a dry resinous finish with a wash of alcohol warmth there.

D: Quite nice with some bold malt toffee and biscuit flavors and enough hops to crank up the bitters. Overall balance is fairly on point with all that being said and this turned out to be a decent intro to Helms for me. Worth picking up every now and then. More flavor than most reds you will find.

Surprisingly rich and malty. This is really a pretty good Red Ale for my taste, rather than the bitter dead end of so many.

Lovely ruby-tinted amber color with a decent foam in the Affligem chalice. Sweet and fragrant. There is a bitter finish, but only after the mellow malt and roasted barley flavors. Pleasing honeysuckle aroma. Major caramel flavors but a woodsy, earthy hop note lurks.

This tastes stronger than the ABV would indicate. The "sweet 'n' bitter" taste gets a little old, but it's great for a short glass. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Barons Market on West Point Loma.
