May 4th, 2016 - A beer in a deep, black tuxedo, the Helms Beerucino looks ready for a Gala ball, and has a nice and fresh cologne of chocolate malt and some hazelnut. The flavor is a little stronger, with a deeper and more complex bitter chocolate note that bounces around the palate well into the aftertaste. A slow sipper with a nice cappuccino zip, this is a post-meal beer to enjoy in a deep, cavernous chair.

Well hey its been fun reviewing a couple of beers I dig today, but unfortunately that time has passed.

Pours a dark brown color with a much lighter brown/tan head 1/4". The aroma went more bitter roasted grain than it did adjuncts like coffee or vanilla. Disappointing when you go in wanting to smell coffee and you barely can perceive it.

What coffee there is, doesn't inspire praise. Its burnt diner coffee, and not the kind I can sometimes get into. Too bitter without anything underneath it to appreciate and latch onto. Lower carbonation also keeps the old coffee diner feel to it all over the palate, it can't be helped or go away. Vanilla? What vanilla? I just don't get any semblance of anything vanilla or smoothing out. Beyond that, the alcohol and bitterness seem to be prominent.

Not a fan of writing a poor review for the first beer I've had from a brewery (much less one in the most competitive market). Hope to have something better to say next time around.

22 oz bottle with a June 2015 bottling date served in a Fat Cat glass.
Pours dark brown with a short-lived head. Black and opaque in the glass.
OK aroma that's dominated by roasted grains.
Flawed flavor with ample dark roasted grain and a moderate amount of coffee, but the coffee carries some old wet grind notes and there's a hint of contamination. Some earthy hops (too much), wood and faint black pepper too.

Good, smooth, full body with medium-low carbonation.

Did a full flight at Helm's. This was an easy one to like and even easier to explain. Lots of coffee in the aroma and flavor. Still a light enough body to be an enjoyable taster.

This beer poured like a bottle conditioned Belgian with a mountain of fizzy foam which quickly fell down into nothing but a tiny ring. I haven't had other beers from Helm, but I hope that it's not a fetish of theirs to over-carbonate their beers, because I don't wish to be reminded of soda pop when drinking beer. The flavor and aroma combined a decent at best representation of coffee and cola (the bottle reads vanilla but I didn't notice much.) As far as porters go, it's nothing terrible, but there are so many better choices out there.

Drank from the bomber while camping, so didn't get the appearance of this one. First try from this brewer.

Smells pretty good, not too roasty but lots of coffee, obviously. Pretty straightforward here. Some chocolate in there too. Some malt and a little spice.

Mouthfeel is where this brew got strange. This bottle seemed to be very carbonated, so I just got a ton of carbonation up front which drowned everything out and left my mouth tingling for a few seconds, very much like soda, which was a little off putting as this would have been awesome had it been a bit smoother...

...but the taste after the fact, was delicious. The coffee lingers and has a bit of a milky and chocolaty hint that I absolutely loved.

Overall this brew is a little too unbalanced all around to be a heavy hitter, but an interesting one nonetheless.
