22 oz bottle with a June 2015 bottling date served in a Fat Cat glass.
Pours dark brown with a short-lived head. Black and opaque in the glass.
OK aroma that's dominated by roasted grains.
Flawed flavor with ample dark roasted grain and a moderate amount of coffee, but the coffee carries some old wet grind notes and there's a hint of contamination. Some earthy hops (too much), wood and faint black pepper too.
Good, smooth, full body with medium-low carbonation.

This beer poured like a bottle conditioned Belgian with a mountain of fizzy foam which quickly fell down into nothing but a tiny ring. I haven't had other beers from Helm, but I hope that it's not a fetish of theirs to over-carbonate their beers, because I don't wish to be reminded of soda pop when drinking beer. The flavor and aroma combined a decent at best representation of coffee and cola (the bottle reads vanilla but I didn't notice much.) As far as porters go, it's nothing terrible, but there are so many better choices out there.

Drank from the bomber while camping, so didn't get the appearance of this one. First try from this brewer.
Smells pretty good, not too roasty but lots of coffee, obviously. Pretty straightforward here. Some chocolate in there too. Some malt and a little spice.
Mouthfeel is where this brew got strange. This bottle seemed to be very carbonated, so I just got a ton of carbonation up front which drowned everything out and left my mouth tingling for a few seconds, very much like soda, which was a little off putting as this would have been awesome had it been a bit smoother...
...but the taste after the fact, was delicious. The coffee lingers and has a bit of a milky and chocolaty hint that I absolutely loved.
Overall this brew is a little too unbalanced all around to be a heavy hitter, but an interesting one nonetheless.

Thanks to Skuter for sharing this one at his tasting.
Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, coffee bean, and brewed coffee aromas. Taste is much the same with bittersweet cocoa, coffee bean, and burnt coffee flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a solid aroma, but there is a better balance of cocoa and coffee in the taste to me.
Serving type: bottle.
