Brewed by:
První Budějovický Pivovar Samson
Czech Republic

Style: Czech Pilsener

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.70%

Notes / Commercial Description:
This authentic Czech Pils is brewed by the famous Samson Brewery. This is a full bodied beer, rich in Saaz hops and brewed following a 200 year old tradition by Czech brew mas-ters. This is a crisp, refreshing beer with less CO2 making it less filling but packed with fla-vor. A strong pale malt quality is evident in the taste profile.

Bottle pour. Golden color with a half a finger head. Aroma has grain and grassy hops. Flavor follows aroma. It was basically okay. There are much better Czech pils out there than this one.

Slightly turbid yellow-gold body, white head that fades to a ring with dots of lace. Nose is bready, some skunk, corn, and grass. Flavor is also grass and grit, corny, and with a bit of skunk, but a bit of spice and mild hop bitterness comes through. Mildly sweet. Body is easily drinkable, gassy but not overly so.
A good pilsner, based in that adjunct-dirty malt flavor with some bitterness to balance it out. As basic as the flavors sound, this would be a great summer pounder.

A: The beer is crystal clear dark yellow in color and has a moderate amount of carbonation. It poured with a short bright white head that quickly died down, leaving lacing on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of skunk are present in the nose, presumably from the green bottle.
T: The taste follows the smell and starts off with a little funkiness and has notes of mineral water and hints of grainy malts. There is a light amount of carbonation.
M: It feels a bit shy of being medium-bodied on the palate and is a little clean with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The skunkiness imparted by the green bottle in both the smell and taste is a little detracting.

Looks are just average. Not exceptionally bright and there is a slight something floating around in there. Thinner head that did last well. Off white and very creamy. Color is gold with yellow undertones. Nose is breaddy pils malt. Soft baked bread with a golden crust on it and sweetly herbal hops. A little spice and pepper. but mostly cool weeds. taste is good malty no real bite from bubble so it's soft in the finish. It has a bit of sweetness int eh finish as well. It's czech style so the bitterness is soft. The malt is slow on the palate though not crisp. Flavors are good though. Clean, no diacetyl, no dms, no fruit. Lgith sulfur saves teh moutghfeel and the aftertaste and lets the malt linger. Not bad.

On draft locally in MD. Off the bat, if you want to call this a Czech pils you can go ahead, but this needs more bitterness to be anywhere near true style. I'll even look over the lack of minerality, but something is missing from this beer. Not horrible though, odds are if I have more than one lager choice, this won't be it.

Praga is a very nice beer with an optimal flavor. It's not Eggy tasting like a presidente. It really does mimic Czechvar somewhat. It's kinda dry for a pilsner though.

11.2 oz. green bottle poured into pilsener

L: pale gold, crystal clear, nice column of bubbles rising up middle of glass; pushes up a 4/5-inch head of white foam, no sticking but it does keep a good collar; a hair darker than the average pilsener, an SRM of as much as 8-9; no lacing, but that collar is awfully pretty

S: light sweet malt and skunk ... bread malt, peach; the skunk disappears after a few minutes, leaving some good grain; bread malt is fruity

T: sweet from the light malt, not as bready as the nose with a slight bit of earth-hop flavor balancing; the flavors come off a bit watered down

F: watery and light but enough carbonation to keep it crisp and give it a bit of weight

O: not bad ... the light-malt sweetness gives it a good fruity flavor; there's next to no hop flavor or hop bitterness, only a slight bit of earthiness, so it tastes much more like a Helles or another of the lighter lagers, but it's still tasty; I won't rush out to try this one again after draining this 6-pack, but I wouldn't turn one down

Bottle from Boise Co-op. Crisp and clear, sharp hops and nice malt profile. Fine active carbonation, small creamy head. Falls flat on palate, no finish.

Crystal clear straw color with white head. Sweet, bready malts with a hint of honey in the aroma. Taste starts slightly sweet and slightly tart at the same time. Towards the finish it's balanced by a slight bitterness. Light body with crisp carbonation making it very easy to drink. Overall this is a decent, easy drinking pils.

Pours a finger and half of head on a clear straw body.
The aroma is grains with a little lemon.
The taste is mild grain and bitter.
The texture is crisp.
It's a solid pils.

From Carrefour. In Paulaner glass. Watching Breaking Bad 5x07.Vulgar beer, a bit nasty but finishable. Doesnt deserve repetition when many cheaper beers would be a similar option

On tap at The Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a light amber, completely clear, with a quarter inch, very little lacing, and lots of racing little bubbles going up to the top.

This smells like slightly fruity lager yeast, with pils malt and some grassy hops.

This is really everything I want a pilsner to be. It appears to be in good condition, fresh and on tap. It's super crisp and refreshing, with spicy, grassy, and herbal hops, crackery pilsner malt, and little bit light dried fruitiness. This is exceptionally "beery."

This is light bodied, crisp and drinkable, awesome.

A really excellent Czech pilsner, one of the best I've ever had.

I really don't even know why I ever elect to buy green bottled beer that clearly says it came from somewhere over in Europe. Wanted a palate washer between a night of crafts in which most turned out to be QUITE bad.

Look - Remember guys, Palate washer. I'm not even going to pretend I poured this. But I can tell you now it is very clear with a very high level of carbonation.

Smell - Oh what a big surprise we got going on here. Skunky, grainy, skunky, more skunk, few more grains, and more skunk. Yawn.

Taste - Starts off skunky with lots of skunk that transitions into more skunk with a touch more skunk. The skunk stays skunky, with skunkinss all over the palate. Finishes skunky. It's skunky.

Feel - Medium bodied with light carbonation. Almost choking in the mouth due to the monster level of skunk.

Overall - Woohoo. Should know what I was signing up for. Another skunky generic european whogivesafuck beer.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #85 (Feb 2014):

Crisp, Clean, Grassy, Spicy

Stunning clarity is topped with a sticky white lace. Fresh-cut grass clippings in the nose with hints of spicy hop. Great balance, with a long trail of clean graininess and a more subtle hoppiness than anticipated. Just enough bitterness from the hops to get by, hint of honey maltiness in the back. While this is quite the drinkable Pils, and it does stand a notch above the more dumbed-down Czech Pilsners we have today, we were hoping for a bit more here.

Pours a clear light gold with a foamy beige head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of sweet grain, grass, and slight skunk aromas. Taste is much the same with sweet grain, corn flake, and grass flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer that is drinkable, but it's a bit too sweet for the style to me.

A- Minimal head, bright golden crystal clear pilsner.
S- Very light clear, clean sweet bread smell, like Hawaiian sweet rolls
T- Tasty sweet rolls, slight sesame toast quality, very light and refreshing
M- not enough carbonation in this bottle at least, the body is perfect though.
O- A very refreshing beer that has all the hallmarks of a gold standard Czech pils wish there was more carbonation.

Picked up in Tesco supermarket Mullingar Ireland. A really cheap option at 1.39 euro for 50 cl green bottle compared to craft IPAS at around 3 euro. Drinkable on a sunny day when as we would say "you a desperate thirst on ye"

Pours clear golden with 2-finger white head, medium retention, classic czech aroma of pale malt and some saaz hops. Solid and even taste, well-balanced malts and hops. Ample bitterness, medium-body, good drinkability. Classic bohemian pilsener.

Nice to see another beer from the Czech Republic into the United States. Praga comes from a green 330 ml bottle, so caveat emptor. On to the beer:

This is one of the dullest beer's I've seen around. Its pale gold color is on track per style, but there's little head on the pour, and even that goes away quick. Its body looks dead, as there are no bubbles running through. The aroma at least is okay. It does have some stink, and also some vague grassy notes. Thankfully, there are no wet cardboard notes, which I was afraid of running into after its embarrassing appearance.

Praga actually has a decent taste. It has a spring of spicy hops. A tinge of honey adds sweetness. Honeysuckle as well. If it weren't for the beer's low carbonation, this beer may actually be pretty good. But as it stands, it may as well be a Pilsner Urquell ripoff.

Appearance: poured crystal clear, lovely carb bubbles floating to the top, no head.
Smell: light biscuity honey
Taste: actually really nice. Light, crisp, refreshing. Wonderful example of the style. Slightly bitter, not overwhelming in any sense. The biscuit malt is cut, in a dusty lightly hopped balance. Loving the higher carbonation level too.

Overall, I think this would be a great bridge brew for someone either just starting into craft, or who wants to try the Czech style. I've had a few better, but this is a solid offering.

Poured from 500mL green bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: rich golden hue with a tiny touch of haze and a strong effervescence. Head is a thin finger of frothy white foam with somewhat OK retention. Not too bad.

Smell: overly sweet malt aroma with a little graininess and a very light hoppy character. Could be better.

Taste: sweet malt with a reasonable dose of noble hops. Not enough to balance out the sweetness, but the flavor is there.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a huge carbonation and bodacious creaminess. Bam!

Overall: this is a drinkable and decent enough example of the style, if a little sweet for my taste.

Pours a completely clear, golden color and is topped with an average white frothy head that soon disappears almost completely.
The aroma is gentle, although its malty and slightly grainy aroma is still easy to point out.
The taste is exactly what you expect. Sweet start, balanced body and slightly bittery finish. Also slight metal kick in the aftertaste.
A very nice beer that's easy to drink, but you would expect a bit more form the Czech. Maybe.

500ml bottle. Pilsner glass. Gold color, clear appearance. White froth, brief crown. Slight floral & yeasty aromas, sulphur hues & metallic odors. Sparkling upfront. Grainy flavor swept out by earthy bitterness. Light body. Bothering carbonation. Spicy notes. Dry & dried finish. Flat & unbalanced.
