Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Recipe change in 2015 upped the ABV from 8.8 to 10.0.

Devil's advocate begs the questions: What happens when you take a ton (literally) of Pilsen malt, put it through a decoction mash, boil it up, add another 500 lbs of Belgian candy and kane sugar, and then add some of Duvel's world famous yeast? The answer: A spicy, sweet, and dangerously drinkable Belgian golden strong ale.

Good friend brought a growler to the weekly hot dog fest. While I am not a Belgian fan..this was a solid beer and would recommend it. The beer poured a clear golden with thin no head and no lace. The scent carries typical Belgian flare with coriander spice. The taste is also typical of most Belgians but this is very well balanced with decent spice. The mouthfeel is medium in body with smooth carbonation. Overall the beer is solid for any Belgian fan.

A: The beer is hazy pale yellow in color. It poured with a short white head that quickly died down, leaving a collar consisting of medium-sized bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of Belgian candi sugar are present in the nose.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste is dominated by flavors of candi sugar and has a light amount of associated sweetness. Notes of pale malts and hints of yeast are also present.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is quite sweet for the style and doesn't have enough hops to balance things out, although any traces of alcohol are well hidden in the taste.

Lots of banana notes. The booze is masked very well

A: Pours a hazy pale golden yellow in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass and moderate pale yellow colored highlights. The beer has a half finger tall foamy off-white head that reduces to a medium sized patch of very thin film covering about 40% of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of sweet Belgian candi sugar and pale malts over the top of light to moderate aromas of spicy Belgian yeast.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of pale malts and moderate to strong amount of Belgian candi sugar sweetness. That is followed by light to moderate flavors of spicy Belgian yeast and a hint of earthy hops which leaves a hint of bitterness which fades away quickly leaving a lingering moderate sweetness.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: Very sweet though that sweetness does help to hide the 10% ABV. Not enough hop presence to balance this one out. Enjoyable but don't think I will be looking for this one again.
