a slightly bitter IPA from a brewery I'd never heard of, that's fortunately within a couple hours drive. I liked it because the bitterness really came thru the hops and citrus, something I don't get in most other IPAs.

The Church Street Brimstone is ok...nothing fantastic. The poured a hazy golder with essentially no head and no lace. The scent was malty leaning toward the sweeter side. The taste was also bolstered by sweet malt...with a bitterness at the end which was grapefruit leaning. The mouthfeel was medium in body with so so carbonation. Overall its ok....worth a taste sure.

12oz bottle; no freshness date, bottle says 6.8% ABV, brewer's website says 6.4% ABV
L - hazy amber with a thinner ivory head that fades to a foam atop the ale
S - caramel malt, bread, earth, and some pine, faintly fruity
T - fruity, caramel, bread crust, pungent pine and citrus, earth
F - medium body, resinous, very bitter and dry finish with the pine lingering
O - better than the other Church Street offerings I've had. This was good, but not great. It was better than expected, but I won't be buying it again.

Bottles just showed up locally today...

Bright saturated orange, fluffy billowing head that rises above the rim in craggy peaks, with spotty lace all around the glass. After awhile it fades to a broken surface skim.

Citrusy hop aroma with some light malt sweetness, pungent and resinous, tangerine pith and zest from the peels.

Firmly bitter with a big citrusy Cascade hop taste. Tangerine and grapefruit, exotic papaya, bitter citrus peel. Fairly complex and nuanced, this is undoubtedly very fresh. Medium bodied and light on the palate, easily drinkable. Surprisingly this is very good.

12 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. Another new local brew coming out of Itasca, Illinois.

Poured into a Lagunitas mason jar.

A - Pours a nice burnt sienna orange colored body with two fingers of off-white foam for a head. Semi-clear with a slight haze. Some stringy lacing, but none sticks.

S - Smell is of dirty herbal earthiness, fresh earthy vegetal greens, grapefruit hop bitterness, lemongrass, papaya, and some bready malt.

T - Taste is light and floral, fruity, and tropical. Good hop bitterness with solid citrus fruits and bready malt balanced nicely. Grapefruit, lemon, orange, and maybe just a hint of peppercorn. Tastes very fresh, above all.

M - Feel is smooth and creamy, with minimal resinous hop bitterness lingering. A nice clean finish.

Overall, a nice introduction to this new brewery for me; I am definitely looking forward to trying out more of these beers. In all, a solid IPA offering from these guys, definitely recommended if it is available to you.

Served in a tumbler.

Is it bad that I immediately recall scenes of The Binding of Isaac whenever I hear the word brimstone? Anyway, this stuff pours a clear golden-brass topped by a finger of off-white foam. The nose comprises earthy greens, lemon peel, light orange rind, and grass. The taste brings in more of the same, with the emphasis leaning toward the earthy greens and the grass. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, a nice, decently-balanced IPA, straight up.
