For a true DIPA enjoyed a year after bottling, it would be easy to assume that this is a stale hop bomb - especially being familiar with the original Realization, and with Beer'd being such a small brewery.

Such an assumption would be incorrect. This brew was unbelievably smooth and balanced. The hops - from aroma to palate to bitter finish - were certainly less potent than when fresh, but there was not the slightest hint of staleness.

The gin barrels added a remarkable complement to the profile, as well. I am not a fan of gin, but it added a grassy, almost flowery character that blended perfectly with the base beer.

A fantastic beer, and a creative use of barrels.

Numbers 095-099, 102 purchased in July 2014 from the source. Got significantly better with age. Peaked around 4 months after bottling. Got very subtle and the boozy, earthy characteristics reminiscent of the European greats from the barrel process really shined through after 6. I wish I had cellared all of mine instead of being greedy early on. Beer'd does great work day in and day out, and I especially cannot wait for more oaked and bottled releases.

22oz bottle. Bottle No.136. Pours a murky brownish amber color with a thin layer of head. Very little lacing. The aroma is booze with lots of pine. A hint of citrus with some floral notes. The taste is a blend of the gin barrels and pine hops. More floral flavor towards the middle. Finishes with more of the gin and pine mix. The Gin flavor isn't overpowering and works very well. Tastes almost like Xmas in a bottle. Boozey but with a good amount of bitterness. Very little carbonation, as expected. This is my first ever Gin Barrel Aged beer and frankly I'm surprised how well it works here, especially since I'm not a big fan of Gin. Overall, unique and delicious Imperial IPA that I'm glad I got to try.

Bottle #396 served in a tulip. Pours a dull, orange hue with with a slight haze to the clarity and a loose, 1/8th inch, off-white head that quick;y dissipates into a soapy/oily slick. Nose is malty with a slightly candied quality and an herbal essence - almost like peppermint (kind of reminds me of a candy cane). Taste follows nose with the addition of a medicinal quality - definitely gin barrel attributes; however, it nicely muddles with the malt profile. Mouthfeel is light-medium with a crisp carbonation and a light ethanol burn that lingers at the back of the throat. A decent DIPA, despite the fact that I generally don't care for gin. That said, props to Beer'd for the effort.
