We put together an insane malt bill for Revery – two row, Crystal 40, Carafa, roasted barley, chocolate malt, and flaked oats combine to make Revery incredibly smooth and rich while boasting a high alcohol content. A delicate blend of Northern Brewer, Tettnanger, and Hallertau hops round out this wintery masterpiece.

The aftermath of NBS (Week 746) CANtinues as I eradicate the CANned Beer Backlog here at Chez Woody in support of The CANQuest (tm). This is everything that I had set aside on Sunday, but just did not have the stamina or wherewithal to get through that day. I am now unemployed as my time as a substitute teacher has come to a close for the Summer & what better way to while away the idle hours than by catching up? Time enough, at last, indeed. I am set, as long as all of my glassware does not break …
From the CAN: "Revery is a daydream in a glass … and now in a [CAN]! We put together an insane malt bill for this Russian Imperial Stout. English and American 2-row, Crystal 45, Carafa, roasted barley, chocolate malt, and oats combine to make Revery incredibly smooth and rich. A delicate blend of noble round out this masterpiece. Revery is a dark, malty escape best enjoyed in front of a roaring fireplace."
I was VERY excited to try this one, having visited the brewery in their nascence! Even then, they were CANmitted to CANning at least their flagships & now, obviously well beyond. I beCAN with a Crack! of the vent, followed by a steady, even-handed C-Line Glug into the awaiting goblet. It formed just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, deep-brown head with modest retention, thanks to the relatively large surface area created by using a goblet. Color was an inky, stygian Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), allowing ZERO light penetration. Nose had a beautiful roastiness, like a cross between my morning coffee and a chunk of dark chocolate! Mmm. Catherine the Great would be most pleased with this offering, I am sure. Mouthfeel was thick, dense & rich, like a liquefied brownie! I let it just roll around on my tongue to warm as I CANtemplated this one. The smoky, roastiness really came alive as I did this. I would have to say that it was more chocolaty than coffee-like, but by the same token, it was anything but sweet. This is precisely the sort of thing that I want in this style. Kate the Great was a no-nonsense matriarch who simply wanted a beer to sustain her through the day until she could retire for the evening & indulge in vodka through the night. She would NOT have brooked something sweet as a result & I simply follow in her exalted footsteps. OMFG, this was gooood! The roasted malts were the centerpiece in this gem & I found myself drinking it perhaps a bit more quickly than was called for. One sip seemed to segue into the next …. Ahh. How satiating it was. Their choice to use Noble hops was a good one since they did not interfere or become overrun as happens in the Cascadian/Dark IPA style. Here, the malts were queen & rightfully so. Did I mention the CANparatively low price point? Perhaps a cooler full of this and Oskar Blues' Ten Fidy when heading to the beach this Summer? I'd either awake on the shore, burnt to a crisp or clinging to my mostly-deflated inflatable raft as the Coast Guard chopper hovers above me with a SAR swimmer being deployed to bring me into the aircraft. NOT advisable! Finish was dry and smoky & left me pondering my next move.

This was poured into a snifter. The appearance was a dark brown color almost black. Thin white to off white foamy head that quickly dissipated. Concave light lacing. The smell had all of the initial qualities of a nice RIS with more roast and bitter coffee coming all about. Subtle cocoa underneath. The taste was more roasty than sweet with some subtle dark fruits engaging the flavor nicely. More roastiness on the aftertaste and gets slightly sticky on the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body. Decent sessionability about it. Carbonation is quite low key on this one. Bitterness of coffee hits with a slight stickiness as well. Overall, for the most part, it’s a good RIS, I could come back to.
