Pours a nice, medium-brown sticky head, with very good retention and thick lacing. Brew is super dark black, with hints of purple.

Aroma: dark, over-roasted black coffee instantly springs to mind, with a slightly tart oak barrel behind. Coffee beans, grapes, cream, oak. A hint of chocolate.

The nose may not be overly complex, but everything is present in the flavor. Dark black coffee (French roast? Difficult to say), vanilla, chocolate malt, roasted barley, cream, with whiskey, hay, and oak on the back end. Surprisingly subdued from the BA aspect; not at all surprisingly strong on the coffee side.

Very thick and chewy mouthfeel; lively with minimal sting; full, full bodied. Slight foaming, and slight heat. Excellent!

This is a complex BA coffee stout that seems to do everything very well. The coffee flavor is very strong without overpowering everything else; the barrel adds complexity without dominating; more traditional stout flavors are present. Very nice beer.

Thanks to JayORear for providing this excellent beer.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours midnight black. Moderate amount of bubbles and a slight finger of tan head that quickly fades away.

Smell: A roasty and rich dark malt driven aroma with a scent of coffee, chocolate and whiskey. Big upfront scent of coffee beans. Barrel scent of whiskey, oak, vanilla, and wood. Malt scent of dark chocolate, toast, biscuit, and caramel along with yeast. Sweet scent of molasses and brown sugar. A really nice roasty aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a roasty and rich dark malt driven taste with notes of coffee, chocolate, and whiskey. Big taste of coffee beans. Barrel notes of whiskey, oak, vanilla, and wood. Dark roasted malt notes of dark chocolate, biscuit, toast, nuts, and caramel along with some yeast. Sweet taste of molasses and brown sugar. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Rich and creamy with minimal alcohol heat.

Overall: A really great Imperial Coffee Barrel Aged Stout. Great mix of coffee, chocolate, and whiskey flavors.

12 oz bottle. Pours dark inky black with a wispy brown head that quickly goes to a thin collar that leaves a little lacing.

The aroma is nutty fudgy malts, oakey vanilla bourbon, and roast coffee with a little fruitcake.

The flavor is sweet sugary fruitcake and light bourbon with some black licorice and a heavy roast finish with a bit of an alcohol burn. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, if only it tasted as good as it smelled. It's too sweet (probably to try to get the alcohol up) with an attempt to balance with the heavy bitter roast. I don't really get any coffee flavor. Still interesting though.
