Barrel Aged Bomb! is the result of our world famous imperial stout, Bomb!, that was tucked away in wooden barrels for several months. Vanilla and caramel notes balance the big flavors from the whiskey barrels and come together for an extremely complex yet balanced experience.

ABV varies from batch to batch.

Drank from a 12Fl. Oz. bottle purchased at Quickie Pickie, Austin, TX

Served in a snifter

Review #1150

Prairie Artisan Ales always have some incredible graphics on their bottles and this one might just be their most insane looking label to date. With an aggressive pour, a barely there, khaki colored film topped the thick, oily and nearly still, absolute pitch black liquid. The head morphed into a bubbly collar. Droplets of lacing trickled down the glass.

The aroma was outstanding. Super rich and fragrant. Freshly brewed coffee and chocolate fudge notes dominated. Perhaps some chocolate syrup as well. Sweet but not cloying. Loads of smooth bourbon. Vanilla also came through strong. Intense coconut notes. This reminded me a lot of Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout.

The flavor profile was terrific but not quite as smooth or as intense as the aroma. Roasted malts were noticeable on the front end. Bit of chocolate fudge. Espresso came through in the center. Good dose of vanilla. More roast and char on the back end. Some whiskey. Very subtle spice notes appeared in the finish. I probably would not peg this for chillies though. There was a good amount of alcohol heat and a subtle, lingering bitterness as well.

The mouthfeel was rich and creamy but a bit undercarbonated. Fuller bodied for the style. The liquid contained a very fine and mellow effervescence. After each sip, the beer left a sticky film on my lips.

Barrel Aged Bomb! is a big and flavorful yet smooth and rounded imperial stout that demonstrates a subtle yet notable use of whiskey barrels. This beer is definitely more interesting and complex than regular BOMB!

Appearance - The beer was deep black in appearance with tan bubbles crowning the pour.

Smell - Chocolate and cinnamon were the most prominent notes. It did not seem to have a lot of heat.

Taste - Like the nose, the profile was chocolate forward with cans of cinnamon. The booze was not terribly heavy. There was just a touch of spice that lingered at the finish.

Mouthfeel - I anticipated a bigger body with this beer. Did the barrel aging cause the body to deteriorate?

Overall - I had a little bit of disappointment with this one. It did not burn like regular bomb.

2021 vint 12 oz bottle into an oversized cognac snifter.
Pitch black. Low foam, leaves a lil ring of oily film instead.
Smells of dark chocolate, vanilla, caramel and bourbon.
Taste follows - cleans up with a zap of alcohol.
Feel is heavy - a stout Stout. Low to no carbonation.
Overall - if you an adjunct Stout fan, you’ll do cartwheels over this.
Meaty beaty big and bouncy.,
