Phantasmagoria is an IPA that is low in malt flavors, but high in hops. We brew this beer as a nood to the big hoppy beers of the west coast. We use loads of citrusy and piney hops at the end of the boil and in the fermenter to make this beer a hop experience.

The slightly hazy dark golden yellow beer pours out into a Duvel glass with a 1” white head that slowly recedes to a thin layer of foam on the surface while leaving a sheet of foam and lots of lacing on the sides of the glass. Sipping creates a couple of arches of lacing and lots of slender legs of lacing and small patches of foam.
The aromas are mostly about the citrus and pine from the hops. There’s also some light tropical fruit—mango, pineapple—and some light bready caramel from the malt backbone.
The flavors are much as expected from the nose with lots of citrus, resin and tropical fruits. There’s also just a bit of bready caramel malt sweetness that backs up and softens the noticeable bitterness.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied and lightly prickly with the persistent moderate carbonation. The relatively long finish begins as the hops and sweetness begin to fade away leaving to leave light bitterness in the slightly resinous dry ending.
Overall this is a very nice, well made beer that I enjoyed and would be happy to have again. The beer showcases the hops with their citrus, tropical fruits and pine resin without any cloying sweetness or overwhelming bitterness. That all said, I’ll not be going out of my way to find this beer given the easy accessibility of fresher and more locally brewed IPAs.

Pours a hazy light yellow. Citrus aroma. Odd flavor. Bitter up front. Not much sweetness. Tangy finish. Not a fan.

From a can. Love the label art on this one. Cloudy golden color with a thin layer of bubbles. Smells of citrus and floral hops. Medium body with a sticky resin-like feel. Light malt flavor with tropical fruits and a bitter finish. Wouldn't have guessed this to be 8% ABV without reading the can.

This came to me in a tulip glass and the first thing I noticed was the beautiful bright gold color and the smallish but foamy white head. A quick sniff was rewarded with huge notes of citrus, the aroma of Pineapple and I think I detected Mango in there but the scents were nearly overwhelming. I could have just sat and inhaled the smells forever but I was wanting to see if the flavor profile matched the scent and I was not disappointed. It had a sharp fruity citrus taste initially that was followed by a hoppy tart finish. It finished clean and refreshing with a very light mouth feel for a 8% strength beer. It tastes as bright as it looks and was very enjoyable. This will make a great thirst quencher in the heat of the coming summer !
