Funky Gold Amarillo is the second beer in our dry-hopped sour ale series. We took our sour golden ale, Gold, and gave it a heavy dosing of Amarillo hops. The result is a beer that is a mix of tropical fruit and Prairie funk. Notes of peach, orange, white wine, and citrusy brett can be found in the flavor and aroma.

Reviewed from (long-standing) notes. Poured from a 16.9 oz. bottle into a Cigar City Brewing snifter glass.

A: Hazy glowing gold, with fairly low visible carbonation and a thin white head without much retention.

S: Lemony citric tartness, Brettanomyces barnyard musk and a touch of pineapple. Some grassy hops with lesser pine notes, yeasty and a bit tangy.

T: Opens with lemony tartness and citric acid. Grassy and tropical fruity hop bitterness bite. The Brett still has musty funk and some pineapple; then more puckering lemony tartness, bready yeast and biscuity malts. It finishes with lingering Lacto tartness and hop bitterness.

M: Medium body, low alcohol presence. The carbonation sensation is on the low side of average, though the tartness makes up for it somewhat.

O: A really enjoyable beer. I could go through a few of these pretty easily. It’s nothing crazy or over the top, but they struck a nice balance between the hops and tart flavors. Definitely worth a try.

A: poured into a tulip to a hazy light gold topped by a dense two finger white head that retains well and leaves decent lacing
S: Smells of citrus with some slight floral qualities as well as a little funk and sourness
T: Taste is a nice tartness with a good bit of barnyard funk and horseblanket with hints of band aids. The citrus and floral notes from the amarillo are intermixed as well. the hop flavors play well with the bright and clean acidity. The finish on this beer is more funk and sourness with some lingering citrus from the hops.
M: This beer is light in body but not watery. Carbonation is adequate for the style and the beer has a dry finish.
O: Overall this is another good beer from Prairie. It has good flavors and complexity and represents the style well. It isn't nearly as sour as some others but it is there and it works well.
