i for some reason avoided this one for a little while, as much as i also anticipated it. i just had this vibe that it couldnt live up to the expectation, nut beers rarely do, and if anyone could swing it, its probably these guys, but i had my doubts, and they turned out to be somewhat well founded. i would drop the vanilla from this if i were in charge. i mean, prairie obviously has a successful base recipe and formula that they use for their now manifold imperial flavored stouts, but the vanilla makes this sweet and desserty, overly sweet and a little forced, and it detracts from the namesake pecans. the pecans are there, more in taste than nose, but what do rw nuts really smell like anyway right? they add a layer in between the grains, earthy and somewhat distinct, but their moment is brief, as the vanilla, residual sugars, and alcohol quickly take over. its not as balanced as it could or should be in that respect, and while its another delicious dessert stout from these guys, i think it lacks the pivotal thing, the pecans! more pie than straight nut, some chocolate here, creamy and sweet obviously, but it never quite gets where i want it to go, and i long for what i thought it would be in my head. some will love this, and its more nutty than a lot of these ever get, but its a little short of the mark, nice as it still is. its almost totally flat too, which really doesnt work for me. i like the flavors, but this is a small doses only kind of beer. i will be even slower to jump on the next one of these...

Dark brownish black body. Thick with no foam and a small amount of carbonation. This one is probably a bit too aged, but I would have expected it to have aged decently well at 11.5% Hefty amounts of overly roasted malts, and good amounts of soy. Tastes pretty booze actually. Not much pecans or vanilla are to be found. Maybe the character is a bit different, hard to tell. I think there is a lot of fresh hop character brewed into this one that did not age well because it tastes a bit like a year+ old IPA. I'd have to try this one again and rereview.

12oz bottle - "enjoyed" after my 1st day @ my new job

Pours black with a khaki rim, no head. Doesn't smell like much, just a faint sweetness. Taste is very artificial, I get sweetbread and vanilla extract, with a nice bite of alcohol. Better as it warms, but the booze heat is still the best part. This stuff is way too sweet and plasticky - sorta flavorless too. And it doesn't help things that it's way too expensive

From the bottle, it pours a very dark black color with virtually no carbonation or head. Sweetish aroma with noticeable alcohol, at least initially. The taste is sweet and nutty - again, noticeable alcohol. As noted by others, drink it slowly, out of a snifter.

Black color, no foam, little carbonation. Starts sweet but finish bitter with alcohol taste, I can tell it is higher abv. Vanilla is present but subtle. This is made to drink slowly. Quite pleasant to savor.

Had Pe-Kan poured from 12-oz. bottle, no date, gift from friend, into snifter.

The pour is okay: perfectly black, with little head, but leaving a few specks of lace. The aroma is where this beer kicks off: pecans! and some other stuff (rich malts, vanilla?, hop spice). On drinking, more pecans! over a smooth, sweet base, and then a big hop bite and alcohol burn finish.

A rough pour generates a very thin dark tan head on top of very dark brown body. Very sweet aroma, lots of caramel, some dark fruit & alcohol. Sweet flavors, caramel, vanilla, pecan, coffee, toasted malt & alcohol. Mouthfeel is thick & silky smooth with mild alcohol heat. A malty pecan pie of a beer.

First time trying something from Prairie.

Enjoyed in Spigleau stout glass. Pours pure black with no head. Smells delicious although more vanilla than any almond detected, just like the taste. Seems thin to the tongue despite its characteristics.

Bottom line: worth a try but won't be regular part of my purchases
