12 oz. bottle into a snifter

Near black with half-inch light brown head.

Nose: All bourbon and vanilla. Great balance and depth.

Taste: Follows the nose. Rich bourbon and vanilla. Milk chocolate and caramel undertones. Finishes mildly sweet.

Feel: Incredibly smooth and luxurious

I freaking love Paradise, so news that this was oncoming caused a call to loosen up the dollar limits on my debit card & the strings on my sweats. Done & done. 12 oz. bottle.

Pour – black. Nose – really no different than the original, with chocolate, vanilla, & an almost maple-like sweetness. No bourbon. Yet. It’s coming. I hope.

Paradise – Bourbon Barrel Aged is a slow-fuse burn. The bourbon is timid to appear but when it does it takes over, sluicing over the palate & leaving a slight, hard-alcohol type burn right into my sternum. Rather than a bourbon-aged stout, this tastes like bourbon mixed with a stout about 70/30. Take a pick axe to the bourbon stalagmites & one unearths rollicking coconut, scoops of vanilla, black sugar, along with milder roast & chocolate. Plenty of alcohol burn, in sharp contrast to the base beer. Again, I started to think about the other bottle I had in back before I was two ounces in. Then I remember I have a job to go to tomorrow. Is it really that important?

Why did I only buy two bottles of this? Why does it only come in tiny, tiny bottles? WHY ISN’T THERE MORE ABV? This is how one should always watch Two & A Half Men. While one can’t improve too much on the base beer, this manages. Top-tier & one of the best new beers I've had in 2017.

I cannot believe how good this beer tastes. Bottle. Tan head that fades. Black in color.

First, the bourbon. It is in your face, but not hot. The right amount to let you know it is there. The coconut and vanilla are spot on. Vanilla isn't artificial or overly sweet. Nice marshmallow flavor. The coconut is at the right level where it is one of the main attractions, but not overpowering. Lots of prairie base stout flavors which includes a nice amount of chocolate and a light roast. Very little sweetness here, just the right amount. Full bodied, but not oil thick. A 12 oz solo will not be a problem.

Overall, this just might be one of the best (if not the best) $12 bottle of beer I have bought. I had high expectations based off reviews and they were met/exceeded. Don't sleep on this one.
2018 vintage on tap
This year’s vintage features more vanilla than coconut. Blends well with the fudgy base. Same bourbon heat. Warming and smooth. Full bodied. Rich. Definitely a treat, but I prefer the coconut bomb that batch 1 was. 4.6

Prairie Bourbon Paradise, 15.9% ABV, 9 IBU. Pours black with a thin tan head. Nose is vanilla, chocolate, bourbon, and suntan lotion (aka coconut). Taste follows, with more bitterness than the 9 IBU would indicate. Coconut prevails, but less barrel than BA Bomb. Decent mouthfeel, overall outstanding. Damn fine, but I still prefer Pirate Noir and Bomb, and Coffee Noir.

** Update with 10 months age on it. Wow, much better flavor, pretty much chocolate bourbon. I'm upping my flavor score.

** Update with 15 months on it, sweeter than I remember.

** At 20 months it's about the same as 15 months. Have a few left and I'd buy it again.

This is just as great as other reviewers have described accuately. What I can add is that it stands way above the Vanilla Noir, but I haven't had Pirate do can't compare. I've had 3 or 4 of these now and it gets better and better, especially as I drink before or after other highly rated favorites.

Definitely the best use of coconut in a barrel aged stout that I have had. Sometimes I get that heavy "sun tan" flavor in beers where coconut is added but this is perfectly balanced. Bourbon, VANILLA, coconut another winner from Prairie

12oz bottle poured into Transient grenade glass

Before I can even get a pour out of the bottle, the marshmallow hits me on the sniffer. Pour is straight black with cola colored edges when held up to the light. Minimal head. Very, very vanilla taste. Slight bourbon, but not hot, just warming. Coconut is more of an afterthought as it shines through primarily in the finish it's no other accompanying flavors. I can taste it again with every out breath. Almost perfect, slick feel. Really an excellently crafted brew. I don't know how they stacked all of these flavors, each one into individual layers, but they knocked this out of the park!

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours midnight black. Moderate amount of bubbles and a very slight tan head that quickly fades away.

Smell: A very rich dark malt driven aroma with a scent of bourbon, chocolate, and coconut. Barrel scent of bourbon whiskey, vanilla, oak, and wood. Dark roasted malt with a scent of dark chocolate, coffee, toast, caramel, and biscuit with some yeast. Sweet scent of coconut, molasses, and syrup. Also some hints of dark fruit. A very good rich aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a very rich dark malt driven taste with notes of bourbon, chocolate, and coconut. Big barrel presence with notes of bourbon whiskey, oak, vanilla, and wood. Dark roasted malt with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, toast, biscuit, and caramel along with yeast. Sweet taste of coconut, vanilla, molasses, and syrup. Some undertones of dark fruit. A really good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Rich, slick, and fairly chewy. Minimal alcohol heat for 15%.

Overall: A really great Barrel Aged Imperial Stout. Great mix of bourbon, chocolate malt, coconut, and vanilla notes.

i wasnt the biggest fan of the original paradise, way too sweet and way too much vanilla, just totally over the top, comical proportions really, purely novelty sort of brew, at least for me, but this special barrel aged version improves it considerably i reckon, with the coconut really coming out, enhanced by the sweet whiskey and charred oak. i also get a lot more of the roasted grain character than i ever did in the base beer by itself, bitter with some coffee essence, rich still and absolutely sugary, even splitting a small bottle of this felt like a ton of beer, with the alcohol and the sugar just dripping out of it. cool nuance here, not all vanilla, some light smoke, some wet oak, good bourbon and charcoal, milk chocolate desserty vibes, and dried fruits like raisins and figs. the coconut is floral and new and nice, toasted and baked tasting, awesome with the vanilla, which tastes less syrupy and more natural here than it did in the original, owing to the barrel i reckon. huge body and a ton of booze, this is sludgy and thick and viscous to the max, but it lets all the flavors slowly and semi permanently coat the palate, and its pretty agreeable to me overall. maybe not quite worthy as one of the top beers in the world, that seems like a stretch for it, but a special treat nevertheless and another cool one from prairie. huge thanks to my buddy for sharing this one with me, a rarity indeed! diabetic but delicious.

An absolute monster of a beer; had a bottle over the course of an entire evening (and I mean entire) with a very different experience upon first opening and then a couple hours later.

Coal-black with a khaki head that rose up and slouched forward eventually dissipated into a fine swirl of bubbles.

Aroma is massive and...dark - dark roasted malts, dark fruit, dark ground coffee, dark chocolate. Dark intentions really - this is a beast. Behind it all is surprisingly light vanilla and toasted coconut; had the coconut stood out it would have been a feat worthy of a trophy considering how robust the stout comes through.

Taste at the outset was too much for me - dark roasted malts, dark fruit, char, oak, booze and some soy. I drank about a 1/4 of the bottle and then promptly re-capped it and then tucked it away in the fridge for later.

Revisited about a couple hours later and by then my palate (or less likely the beer) had changed and the notes of coconut and light vanilla were more present. Incredibly smooth touched by a noticeable alcohol heat.

Thick, massive and ridiculously smooth despite the ABV.

Wow, exception ride on the razor blade of sweetness, adjunct, and roast. Amazing balance, my only complaint is that at almost 16%, this 12 ounce bottle is really 2 or maybe 3 servings. Cheers!
