Herbal, Spicy, Bready, Boozy

Touted as "a freestyle Saison" made with local honey, Belgian yeast and rye malt that’s also dry-hopped, Super Bee pours bright golden with a touch of haze from the small amount of sediment in the can. Its aroma is herbal, floral and a bit metallic with some yeasty dough and spice. Low carbonation and a moderate body accompany more breadiness, phenols, light caramel, overripe banana, honey and a rye spiciness that's complemented by a warming alcohol. A slightly lemony bite breaks things up, and it finishes a bit tannic and yeasty with a boozy linger. Somewhat all over the place, but a good mashup.

As reviewed in BeerAdvocate magazine #107 (December 2015).

Poured from a 12 oz can into snifter.
A- pours a transparent, golden-orange with a thin, soapy white head. Nearly no lace at all
S- foremost, Belgian yeast, and bready malt. Some citrus makes it's way through in the nose.
T- nice saison yeast hits you first. Again some biscuity malt flavor. Orange peel and a hint of the rye malt spiciness on the back end of the sip. Some of the honey sweetness is evident too.
M- medium feel, medium carbonation. Really smooth for an 8% abv saison. Goes down really easy.
O- pretty solid saison. Not out of this world, but solid. I would definitely drink again.

Medium copper body and a decent white head that settles.
Honey/ sweet smell with some funk.
Tastes malty with plenty of rye and spice.
Medium-thick body, crisp feel.
Overall it's quite herbal for my liking, maybe due to the way the Belgium yeast is at play in the mix?

12 oz can pours a hazed gold with a massive cap of pillowy white head. Nice retention and lace.

Nose is graham crackers, fruity yeast and a little bit of floral hops. Smells pretty good, a little more malty than your usual saison, but it works ok here.

Taste has a hefty pull of grainy, lightly sweetened malts - maybe the honey coming through. The yeast is nice and playfully fruity. There is a decent hop finish that cleans it up nicely. A pretty good little American saison. Not going to compete with the best of style, but makes for a tasty little four-pack. Dont expect farmhouse here, but it clocks in as a balanced beer that hides the ABV well and has a decidedly Belgian flair to it. Maybe more of a BSPA than a Saison.

Appearance: Clear, medium golden body, with a moderate, fairly dense, snow-white head. Streams of carbonation race to the surface. Patchy Belgian-style lacing adorns the glass walls.

Aroma: Spices, phenols, light fruits, and alcohol dominate the aroma.

Taste: Opens, unsurprisingly, with a mild wave of alcohol, in compliment to a modest sweet-and-spicy cast from the rye malt. A mild, earthy undercurrent from the yeast runs throughout. The honey plays a large part in the taste, imparting a dry and lingering sweetness. Finishes with a mild flourish of herbal hops.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, and very full, with soft carbonation.

Drinkability/notes: Very nice, the higher ABV and the prominent use of honey make for a fresh rendition on the familiar Saison style. Its not up to the level of Fantôme Saison, though, curiously, they share a relatively high ABV of eight percent. More than worth a try.

Presentation: Packaged in a twelve-ounce aluminum can, with a large, circular pop-off lid that allows the can to serve as a glass of sorts, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.
