Very Good
Bourbon Barrel Aged Epitaph Russian Imperial StoutBourbon Barrel Aged Epitaph Russian Imperial Stout
Notes: Aged in wet bourbon barrels for several months. Buried in this beer are the remains of what started as one of those small batch side projects. Strong notes of bourbon, black licorice, vanilla, toffee, and subtle botes of roasted coffee that collide into limitless realms of intricate flavors.

After a previous high-octane cellar failure looking for something pleasing to end the night…morning with. 22 oz. maroon five waxed bottle split with the wife, who is humming Depeche Mode.

Black with more peppy head than normal for a big stout. Heavy licorice barely cut by bourbon & dark fruits on the nose. Not what I’d call “promising”.

Epitaph doesn’t hit the right notes in this palate. The dark fruit is ascendant: overripe plums & poop-inducing prunes are ascendant, with a backing of black licorice – which is some mix of what I’d expect to be served at the bar in Purgatory. Bourbon brings heat but no relief from the blech.

This is not good. The high rating is baffling, but hey, tastes differ & all that. My wife hates it. I regret I have to concur. This is garbage.

Brownish black pour with a ups brown ring and lazy spotted lacing, edging is clearly brown in the light. Tootsie roll, huge bourbon, wet oak, licorice, gooey fig, toasted caramel, nesquick cocoa powder, and slight char make up the nose. Taste is more barrel forward, especially the booze up front, tootsie-roll and baker's chocolate with caramel filling linger with the wet oak and char. Feel is lighter yet plenty boozy without being hot, smooth, warm, and barrel driven. A ba stout you don't have to have in the dead of winter

I'm still waiting for a stout that tastes like this, but is 7 or 8% ABV, so I can drink more of it.
This is delicious, as is every brew I've had from this brewer. Their Wee Heavys are awesome. Thanks again Heathen.

Pours a pitch black color with a thin foamy head. Retention is mild. Lacing is good. Big boozy aroma. Licorice and mild coffee on the aroma. Heavy licorice flavor. Coffee on the end. Very boozy. No sweetness. Medium to heavy bodied with mild carbonation.

L: Black as night. Thin tan head of nice retention slowly fades to patches with some lacy stickiness.

S: Roasted malt pervades. Chocolate and vanilla accompanied by tartness and bourbon heat.

T: Follows nose with coffee-like bitterness.

F: Medium/heavy body with a mostly dry finish.

O: Update: I didn't like this with around 6 months bottle age but had a 2015 in May 2017, which had a very different taste profile. Licorice likely contributed but I was not able to distinguish it for certain.

Pours nearly black with a creamy, long lasting, light brown head. Sticky lacing clings to the glass ‘til the last sip. The aroma is dark roasted malt, vanilla, and a hint of bourbon. The flavor follows with the addition of notes of coffee and chocolate. Smooth and creamy, full bodied, with a very light booze finish.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours pitch black with a thin, light brown head that dissipates to long lasting patches with light lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, vanilla, milk chocolate and light bourbon. Flavor follows, with well integrated dark toasted malt, chocolate and vanilla flavors, hints of cherry and nice light, but distinct bourbon. Finishes with dark malt, mild chocolate and a pleasant nutty flavor in the background. Rich creamy body with excellent mouthfeel. An excellent bourbon stout with a spot on rich Russian imperial stout base and interesting lighter support flavors. The nutty component to the malt was unexpected and fit well. I like robust bourbon, but this lighter touch tasted great and fit with the overall balance of this stout. Well done, and I will pick this up again without hesitation the next time it comes around. I did not drink this right away and it has held up to light aging well.

Draft pour. I am not a big bourbon fan, but can appreciate that those who are will enjoy this stout and likely rate it higher. Bourbon was slightly on the stronger side for my tastes, but did feel fairly balanced overall.
