Brewed by:
Beyond the Pale Brewing Company
Ontario, Canada

Style: American Pale Wheat Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Not your Bavarian grandfather's wheat beer. We use grapefruit zest and pulp at different points in the process to insert the character of the fruit into the beer, and hops are carefully selected to emphasize the citrus notes. But don’t expect this to taste like the first course of Sunday breakfast; the fruit flavour is subtle, and the bitter quality of the grapefruit is balanced nicely by a bit of sweetness in the finish.

More of an orangey peach colour than it is pink. Small, frothy white head hangs on as a bubbly collar and leaves a fair amount of lace.

Surprisingly hoppy citrus aroma that blends well with the smell of the grapefruit. Sweet, candied malts, peppery cloves and a faint metallic tone can be also perceived.

The taste is sharp and tart at first, with a pronounced grapefruit presence. Toasted, earthy grains and a caramel-like sweetness follow. Dry finish with a citrus rind flavour, mild astringency and toasted note in the aftertaste.

The mouthfeel is fairly thin but somewhat earthy, with a tangy pop on the tongue.

This will be great in the summer months. Pairs well with salads and light lunches.

Pours a hazy orange with a beautiful rose tint, as advertised. Really nice looking beer in a tall tulip.

Aroma is the only place I really pick up the grapefruit, where it's fairly obvious. Works well with strong notes of wet wheat.

Hm. I don't get very much grapefruit at all, at least not a huge hit of fruit. Bitterness is there alright, and I gather that's the idea. A whole lot of wheat, but not much else. Not a fault of the brewery, just a crappy style I think. Give me some big yeast and spice with this please.

Could use more carbonation, make it pop.

Growler: Poured a cloudy dirty beige color ale with a nice white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of wheat malt with light zesty notes of grapefruit. Taste is also dominated by lightly sweet wheat malt notes with some zesty notes of grapefruit with light hoppy finish. Body is full with limited filtration and good carbonation. Highly drinkable wit beer with a nice hoppy touch. Dryer finish would improve experience even more.

Poured from a 32 oz growler into a stemmed tulip glass (2 hours after fill)

A: A light orangey straw color pouring to a big white head (3+ fingers) falling to a thin color with lots of lacing.

S: The nose is wheaty and yeasty with a hint of that grapefruit zest and some sweet malt.

T: Very wheaty and yeasty from the start followed closely by a wack of bitter grapefruit zest. Unlike many ‘fruited’ beers, Pink Fuzz is wonderfully tart and dry, not a cloying artificial sweetness, which balances well with the wheat and malt. There is a touch of bittering hops that dry out the finish.

M: Medium body, but still very round. Medium Carbonation.

O: A super tasty wheat beer. The tart grapefruit in Pink Fuzz really distinguishes it from the masses of boring seasonal wheat beers.

Very hazy lemony beige colour. Very little head and you expect tons from a wheat beer. And very little carbonation or lacing. Not a good look.

Definitely smells like there is grapefruit in there. Slightly sweet cakey aroma too.

The taste follows the aroma. Grapefruit and tropical fruity bitterness. Good malty caky sweetness. More bitter than the 20 IBU would indicate but also not a hop bomb.

Medium feel with low carbonation.

This is an easy drinking summer refresher. Better than most North American wheet beers that use strong North American hops. The grapefruit adds well to the taste and is not distracting from the beer.

Golden amber with lots of carbonation, and 3 fingers of off white head.

Smells fruity, like ruby red grapefruit, malty and of green, grassy hops.

Tastes of deep, caramelised malts, grapefruit, and green, herbal, grassy hops.

Smooth and foamy, light feeling body with lots of carbonation.

Got in Toronto, drinking in Markham Jan 28th, 2017. Interesting, weird, a little flat in the middle, but good.

Burnt orange with apricot highlights. Two fingers of sticky, fluffy white head leave streaks of lace behind. It's 30 degrees right now and this looks like a beer I want to drink.

Freshly squeezed grapefruit pulp is everywhere. Leafy cascade hops mesh well. There's a nice earthy, sweet backbone. A bit of caramel and a bit of coffee cake.

Grapefruit zest and pulp run from beginning to end. There's caramel and bready malt in the middle. Quite a sessionable beer at 6%.

The feel is well rounded and fluffy, medium bodied and crisp.

This is an incredibly well brewed, sessionable, flavourful American wheat that's gaining a lot of traction here in Ottawa. I would say this is a new stepping stone standard for those new to the craft market. Big thumbs up.

Appearance: It has a nice hazy golden/orange color to it. It has a nice off-white head that dies down moderately and leaves some lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of grapefruit, citrus, wheat malts and faint black pepper.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has some grapefruit zest, citrus, wheat malts, a light grassy bitterness and faint yeast.

Mouthfeel: It has a low-medium carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied by good flavors and aromas.

473 mL can from a London-area LCBO; no packaging date. Served well chilled.

Pours a foggy, translucent golden-yellow hue, with a full inch of spongy, sparkling white head rising from the surface. It dissipates fully within five minutes, with a lovely, even coat of sticky lacing applied in its wake; a frothy collar of foam is also left behind, framing a bubbly, filmy-thin cap. I had been expecting a blast of citrus on the nose, but the aroma is actually rather inconspicuous - there's definitely notes of citrusy pink grapefruit and lemon zest in there, but they aren't all that much more prominent than the underlying backbone of clean, grainy, bready pale malt sweetness. Perhaps a touch of peach and floral hops, but now I'm starting to reach.

Fortunately, the flavour profile is a bit more in line with what I was expecting. Pale malt flavours are a continuous presence throughout the sip, providing a wheat-like, bready baseline with slight hints of caramelized sweetness, all of which help to provide some contrast vs. the citrus and hops (which dominate the tail end of the sip). Pink grapefruit juiciness shows up as expected, as do notes of citrus pith, floral hops and a mildly piney, earthy bitterness at the finish. The aftertaste is a pleasant mix of wheat malt sweetness and light grapefruit pith bitterness which slowly subside from the taste buds. Medium in body, with moderate-to-low carbonation that daintily brushes the palate to little effect; I'd describe the texture as fairly soft and smooth. Fair drinkability at 6%, with balanced, appealing flavours that make it almost semi-sessionable.

Final Grade: 3.86, a B+. Beyond the Pale's Pink Fuzz is pretty solid for a basic flagship offering, but it's not without its issues. I mostly feel that the grapefruit is just underutilized, which is a bit of a no-no when the marketing/label focuses so strongly on that particular element. It's also possible that this is just an old can... but they don't code their products, so I can't take that into consideration. Likely the weakest of the four BtP tallboys I picked up a few weeks back, and not a very memorable grapefruit beer overall... but I'd say it's still good enough to warrant a try, even at $3.50/serving.
