This smooth, full-bodied nectar is a middle ground between a dry stout and an imperial stout. Made with wheat and chocolate malt for low bitterness and round mouthfeel. Made with our friends Against Me!

The description says "a middle ground between a dry stout and an imperial stout." That felt about right--just a hint of booze, but not really strong, also pretty smooth, but not creamy. This is a high-end for middle-of-the-road stout. If I made it, I'd be quite happy, but it's not quite in the realm of "outstanding"--just good and solid and does its job.

I got a late start on yesterday's NBS (Week 774) & I did not finish up my DelMarVa (+ DC) adventure as planned. 8=( Further, I have promised that next week's NBS (Week 775) will be dedicated to the wonderful beers sent to me by @jkblr who seems to have a real handle on my drinking habits. CANsparency is key in these things! As a result, I am going to CANcentrate over the next few days on eradicating everything that would have CANbined to form the finale of the DelMarVa (+ DC) adventure. Sit down, strap in & hang on. It's gonna be a wild ride!

From the CAN: "An American Stout Beer"; "A Collaboration between Champion Brewing Company [&] Against Me!"; "This smooth, full-bodied nectar is a middle ground between a dry stout and an imperial stout. Made with wheat and chocolate malt for low bitterness and round mouthfeel."; "45 IBU".

Now, things are starting to rock! I beCAN by Crack!ing open the vent & beginning a slow, gentle C-Line Glug into the awaiting glass. I was pleasantly surprised by a pseudo-cascade that led to the formation of just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with good retention. Color was Very Dark Brown to Black/Opaque (SRM = > 34, < 44) with just enough clarity to be able to identify mahogany highlights throughout. 8=O Nose was brilliant with notes of dark chocolate, raisins, prunes, licorice, tooled leather, dried cherries & light smoke. Mmm. Christmas may have come early! Jeez-O, man, if this pans out, I may set the remainder aside for next year's Christmas (crock) Pot Roast. Nomnomnom. Mouthfeel was satisfactorily medium, but I just felt like it needed a bit more body. The taste was not as intense nor as variegated as the nose. Instead, it was more chocolaty & smoky than fruity, more akin to a liquefied chocolate brownie. I did not get much in the way of hops so if I had to guess, I would have said closer to a Dry Irish Stout than an RIS or even an AmeriCAN Stout. Still, it was quite pleasant throughout & remains a CANtender for next year's crock pot roast. Finish remained dry, especially for a Stout. Definitely a dry Stout & should be reviewed & rated as such. YMMV.

This was poured into a nonic pint glass. The appearance was an all black color with a one finger white to off white foamy head. Light lacing runs the gamut in a speckled sort of slightly spider web way around the glass. The smell had a grainy and black licorice running over top of some light roasted caramel malts. Dark chocolate and milk chocolate combine to come out slightly. The taste was roasty and definitely grainy with an ample amount of the sweet black licorice leading into the aftertaste and having a slightly drying effect in the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a good sessionability about it. Carbonated as a stout, this one sat fairly well and ended up smoothing somewhat out to a refined graininess from the wheat. Overall, I say this was a pretty good "wheat" stout that I could have again.

Champion Brewing Co. "Black Me Stout"
12 fl. oz. can without freshness dating or production coding
$2 @ Weis Market, Conshohocken, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: Well it looks like I'm screwed on this one, waiting for the head to settle down. I only poured about a fifth of it before the head was at the top of my Imperial pint glass. Almost opaque brown-black body with just a glimmer of deep mahogany brown at the base of the glass. Frothy... foamy tan head. From what I can tell the head retention and lacing are excellent, although I'm guessing that's due to overcarbonation that's due to age. Let's see if I can get the rest of the beer in... success! It looks better now than it did before. Aroma? Fruity over an ashen roastiness backed by dark chocolate. It's still a bit cool, so let me move on to the flavor. Ahhh.. not much different than the aroma except that the chocolate and roastiness are reversed in order. There is a little bit of an odd note in the aroma at this point though, a bit of a plastic or medicinal phenol. Nice bit of dark chocolate in the flavor though with a little bit of golden malt, and not a lot of roast at all - at least not coffee-like to be sure. Acidic though, but I can't tell if it's from dark malts or something else as it kind of mingles with the fruitiness. Mouthfeel is light-medium, and it's zesty with carbonation. I'm getting a kind of "green beer" note to it; and I'm also finding some grassy and leafy hops in the background. Ehhhh, it's just not working for me. I'm not sure if it's green beer, or old beer, but the off-character is just too distracting. And it's a bit thin, and certainly not "full-bodied" as the label states. I'll give it another shot in the future, but I can't even give it a thumbs up as it is.

Unknown vintage; drank 7/5/15 @ the Yarchives.

Poured from the can into a glass.

Black appearance.

A rough pour yielded a huge tan head; decent lace.

Fresh earth, bakers chocolate & roasted coffee notes in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

Fresh earth, chalk & bakers chocolate flavors up front; hop bitterness on the finish. This was OK but the bitter finish was jarring.

Disappointed. Looks nice - good and black like coffee. HUGE, very active head. Smell is pretty good, though slightly... acrid. It tastes like a generic stout, which is to say that nothing stands out about it.

Where this beer fails for me is in the feel. While there is some creaminess, it's also kind of watery. And despite the large head, carbonation is very minimal. Reminds me of Guinness, which - for me - is not desirable.

Color typical dark stout blackish brown. Nice big head with an aggressive pour, tan and big-bubbled with cavities developing if allowed to rest. Head lingers somewhat but not as clingy in glass as some. Nose obvious but a bit monotone. Taste decently balanced but not overwhelming. Mildly creamy mouthfeel, nothing extraordinary. Hoppy ending as would be expected with the style. A good, enjoyable stout, but I can't say that it stands out in any particular area.

This was from a can, dated 11/24/2015 (don't know if that's the dated is was produced... hope so).

Looks like a stout, pitch black with an off white coloured head.

Smell is chocolate, roasted malts, licorice, cola. It's a bit on the light side though.

The taste is coffee, bitter dark chocolate, chocolate.

The mouthfeel is too light, with a soda like carbonation.

Overall a not terrible but pretty mediocre stout. Way too light bodied as well as light smelling and tasting.
