Notes: The Angry Monk doesn’t really fit into a specific beer category or meet specific style guidelines. Therefore it is what it is – which is to say that it displays a very Belgian character due to the yeast strain. You may notice that this beer is very different from our St. Marks Dubbel. That is because we use an entirely different yeast strain for this one.

The aroma is heavy on the caramelized banana side with a dash of licorice. We don’t filter the Angry Monk, nor any of our other Belgian-style beers, however, one distinguishing characteristic of this particular yeast strain is that it is highly flocculating which means it leaves the beer very clear and bright without sacrificing any flavors.

Enjoyed this beer on 8/27/15 at the brewery. Very tasty but I would equate it more to a dubbel than a Belgian IPA mostly because of the caramel color. The body and carbonation lean more closely to an IPA but the taste and color for me are more of a dubbel. A decent beer nonetheless, but most definitely one with a bit of an identity crises, not that that's a bad thing!

not sure we have this one rightly classified here, more a dubbel type than a belgian pale, caramel to even mahogany in color, mostly clear, less heady than others they make, but with a great malt profile thats full of caramelized sugars, red apple notes, raisin and date fruitiness, but doesnt taste as sweet as it seems like it would be, maybe thats why it fits less neat in a particular style category. certainly it is lighter in sweetness and abv that just about any dubbel i have encountered, but the grain complexion is not dissimilar. the yeast here is fruity and bright, a neat contrast to the heavier malt, apple and grape notes to it, some autumn spices suggested too. i wish this one had more bubbles, the less than lively carbonation makes it sag a little, although i like it not being so sweet by the finish considering how almost rich and caramelized it all is in the center. a neat abbey type ale, borrowing from several different styles but coming together well. i liked all the belgian beer here, and reckon these guys are making much better beers than they are getting credit for...
