Brewed by:
BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse
Arizona, United States

Style: American Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.90%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Nutty Brewnette is an American-style brown ale. A blend of four different dark malts contributes to a flavor profile that is sweet with “nutty” notes. A healthy dose of hops makes this beer hoppier and more balanced than most English brown ales.

Part of the sample flight in Daytona branch.

Sight - quite red, a white head on top.
Smell - very faint traces of cocoa, no noticeable hops
Taste - sweet malty nuttiness, some cocoa, again lacking a hoppy bite.
Sweet - 3/5
Bitter - 1/5

This beer was unbalanced in my opinion, really could have used a bit more hoppiness in the background just to cut through the sweetness.

This beer was poured a dark brown with a slight hint of red, the head was a slightly tan white that did not last long at all. There was a minimal amount of lacing. The aroma of this beer was fairly week, but there were hints of chocolate and toasted malt.

The taste was a typical brown ale flavor, similar to Newcastle. The were signs of chocolate and malt, and a slight hint of hops though not very much. The mouthfeel was ok with the CO2 being just right, but the beer seemed a little thin or watery.

All in all not a bad beer, but not my first choice from a place that I have had some really good beers.

Sampled this on 4/23/08. Dark brown colored with a decent tan head and some lacing on the glass. The beer is sugary sweet tasting with some malts and a touch of bitter hops. Pretty good brown ale but it's just a little too sweet and sugary for my liking.

Tasted on tap at the Albuquerque location.
Color is deep red verging on mahogany. Persistent, creamy tan head. Aromas of break and light roasted notes with only a hint of earthy hops. Flavors dominated by lightly roasted malt. Low flavors of Indistinct hops; clean fermentation with very low fruity yeast. Medium body with low carbonation. Hops bitterness is low. No alcohol presence. Overall an ok brown ale but I expected more hops presence in an "American-style Brown Ale".

Sample at the Columbus location. Clear dark brown color with a medium off-white head that has decent retention. Stringy lacing. The aroma is nutty and has malty characteristics as well. Medium-bodied with a smooth texture. The flavor is sweet malt, nuts and soft hops. The finish is mildly bitter and does not linger much. Aside from the clever name, it is average all around.

Reviewed 5/9/2006 (Tap @ BJ's, CL):

Pours a dark red/brown colored body, fizzy. Has a smallish head, tan yellow in color. An aroma of malts, and strong hops. But not a very strong aroma. Has a strong nutty stouty taste. Fizzy palate, fresh tasting. Some hops.

Perhaps my favorite beer yet at BJs. Pours a dark brown to maroon with a lasting tan head. Smell is very nutty, and toasty malt. Taste is similar and nutty with a hint of hops. A bit watery but not as much as some others. Creamy, easy drinking and simple, but a nice brown ale overall.
