Vietnamese style coffee stout. Rich, thick mouthfeel gives way to lush sweetness with hints of coffee character followed by notes of cream, toffee, and vanilla.

Black body under a finger or two of tan foam... "Vietnamese-style coffee stout with brown sugar and cream extract..." Inspired by Ca Phe Sua Da, a Vietnamese coffee drink...

I get some coffee and roasted dark malt aromas, followed by flavors suggestive of a coffee soda or coffee ice cream float - which I think was the whole idea, but for me it was a bit off the mark - little too sweet and milky, a little too thin and light/fluffy - got lots of cola-like impressions, which I'm not a fan of, and there was something saccharine about the sweetness... So maybe this is a personal preference thing - the beer delivers on its descriptors and depending on your tastes, you might really like it...

16oz can poured into a snifter

Dark cola on the pour, dark brown liquid in the glass capped by a dense two finger brown foam crown, quickly recedes in under 5 minutes

Fragrant coffee on the pour, whiff of cinnamon

Taste is coffee with a hint of cinnamon

Slightly sweet , no bitterness , light creaminess

Really good beer , repeatable

Notes via stream of consciousness: Here I thought this was just a coffee stout but it's actually got brown sugar and cream extract added. I guess I can live with that. OK, so it's poured an opaque black body beneath a short head of dark tan. I can't tell if it's clear or not. In the aroma there's already some green pepper which is a little odd as this is still fresh - well, it's at least before its best by date. I get roastiness and coffee as well, and there's some caramel, perhaps a note of vanilla, and some pleasant but not really descriptive fruitiness that could be coming from the yeast or even the coffee itself. The head has not held too well at all, and it's dropped to just a thin veil that covers the surface of the beer; and unfortunately the lacing is quite lacking as well. Not a good showing so far, but let's see how it tastes... well I get some of that green pepper upfront, probably because I'm smelling it, and then it becomes sweet and creamy - really, as if it had a lot of rich cream in it. Obviously it tastes of coffee as well, and they've done a great job of getting that fresh, oily coffee bean flavor in there. So, damn, they may have pulled it off even with a poor aroma and appearance. It's nicely balanced with a moderate bitterness but a little bit of acidity, and then of course the roastiness that helps to dry it in the end as well. That's not to say it has a dry finish though, it's sweetish, but it's balanced. I'm assuming that alcohol is helping with that a little bit as well but it doesn't stand out. How strong is this? 9.5% abv, ahh, that's not that much. It shouldn't show, and it works, so there. In the mouth it's medium-full with a dextrinous feel. Overall I like it quite a bit and I've grown accustomed to the green pepper note so maybe I can be lenient on that as it is a part of the coffee. It's nicely done. I can't decide if I'd call it a dessert beer or not, but it's not something that I'd drink out at the bar, say having two or three. I do think it would make a great ingredient in some desserts though, although you could easily reproduce what they've got here easily with regular ingredients. Worth trying.

Once again, the brewing team that's comprised of Evil Twin and Two Roads brewing companies join hands for their preverbal beer version of kumbaya; this time comprises of an sweetened imperial stout with the roastier, drier, spicier Vietnamese coffee for a challenging but high culinary reward.

Pouring nearly jet black, Saigon Scooter Selfie builds a tall mocha lather with great staying power and a sturdy foam structure. The beer's stouty scent leads the way with burnt grains, sweet cream, vanilla and dark chocolate along with a stern backseat of dark roast coffee and an earthen, soilish spice. Lavish sweetness slathers the tongue with a host of sweet cream, caramel, sorghum and honey.

A high roast character balances the sweetness as the dark ale departs for the middle palate to ensure that a roasty, toasty, campfire character is front and center. Earthy, with a mossy, moist soil character, the peppery spice of Asian coffee carries a spicy grit, strong acids and a piquant smoldering ember character into a late palate of broad woodsiness and a warming roast of Creme de Cacao.

Full, velvety and dense, the beer's long linger of sweet cream and bittersweet chocolate balance the coffee's challenging earth and spice while trailing with a marshmallowy texture and a malty sweet aftertaste. Alcohol spice warms the finish while an afterglow of coffee and scorched earth persist.

Pours an effervescent mahogany with one finger of tight caramel colored head. Alright lacing, traces of head retention

S: Faint coffee notes, grows some as it warms, then plenty of vanilla

T: Coffee, a little vanilla, a touch of dry roastyness up front, sweet cream/mocha as well. Dryness, sweet vanilla, just a little coffee as this warms, this is for fans of Iced Coffee for sure. Finishes sweet, dry, & a little creamy

MF: Medium body, slight carbonation, smooths out pretty nicely

Pretty drinkable for the ABV, but was looking for more depth of flavor & certainly a little more coffee

16 oz. Can

Poured into a Squatters true pint glass a pretty nice dark brown/black color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/creamy one-finger tan head, which leaves some sticky lacing behind. The nose is malty, hoppy, with a nice touch of chocolate, toffee, coffee, vanilla, licorice, cream. The taste is pretty nice, malty, hoppy, with some pretty nice chocolate/toffee, coffee, very nice touch of vanilla, licorice, cream, pretty nice sweetness. Medium body, ABV is hidden very nicely, a pretty nice complex brew, a nice sipper. Overall, this one is pretty taste. Nice to see it around here.

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a half finger high dark beige head that left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate to strong aromas of coffee beans are present in the nose.
T: The beer tastes like a coffee with a lot of cream and sugar.
M: It feels a bit more than light-bodied and somewhat smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is quite sweet for a coffee beer and is probably something that would be enjoyed by coffee lovers that have a heavy hand with the sugar and cream.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with a half finger dark khaki head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, coffee, vanilla and a little lactose. Flavor is dark toasted malt, creamy coffee, vanilla and cinnamon. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess, nice mouth feel. They really pulled off their intent with this one, it tastes a lot like a creamy cold coffee drink. I don't know the specific Vietnamese coffee drink they are emulating, but if it tastes like this, I'd like it too. A good coffee stout right off the bat, but the lactose adds a genuine coffee cream note that works quite well. A little on the sweet side, but not cloying, nice coffee character. Well done.

Best before 8/29/19. 16oz can poured into a tulip. Pours almost black with a khaki head that fades leaving solid retention and lacing. The aromas are malt forward. Some subtle coffee notes. The flavors are pretty bold. Lots of coconut and vanilla. The coffee and brown sugar is there. Hints of cocoa. Lots of Irish cream. Some caramel and toffee in the mix. This one kind of has a "Dr. Pepper" vibe going on, which might sound weird. This one is definitely on the sweeter side, but it's not cloying or over the top. Nice malt backbone. Alcohol is well hidden. Mouthfeel is on the lighter side of full-bodied with moderate carbonation. This one is smooth and dangerously drinkable.

This is a really nice stout and collaboration. This beer is definitely in the "dessert beer" category. It's on the unique side, especially the flavors, which takes this one to the next level. I really like it.

Poured into a 16 oz snulip glass best before 8/29/19. Pours a very slick near pitch black with a 2 plus finger sticky khaki head that leaves a few thin streaks of lace and that settles a tad quickly. 4

Smell is vanilla, toffee, coffee grounds, cocoa nibs, and a hint of peppery spice. 4

Taste follows vanilla, coffee, and cocoa stand out, some toffee and a little hint of spice and I mean tiny. 4

Mouthfeel is a little bigger than medium, gentle carbonation, a tad dry, and at 9.5% ABV extremely drinkable. 4

Overall this is very nice, I will be honest I wanted more but I appreciate what they did with this one. A little thicker would have have been even better. 4 Heading out to the slopes now. Cheers all.

16 oz can poured into a snifter.

Cola like color with an off white head leaving small amounts of lacing around the rim of the glass.

Smells of chocolate, fake creamer, coffee and sugar.

Taste is sweet from start to finish. Candy like and off putting. Drain poured as I just could not finish the last 6 ounces or so.

Thin and too cola like.

Some may enjoy this but this Is too dessert like with a straight up sugar taste that I just couldn't handle. If you like sugar bombs this one is for you.

16 ounce can into snifter, best before 8/29/2019. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, medium roast coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, cream, coconut, roasted nuts, and toasted dark/brown bread; with lighter notes of molasses, licorice, raisin, fig, cherry, date, smoke, wood, herbal, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malts, sugars, coffee, and light fruity yeast/earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, medium roast coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, cream, coconut, roasted nuts, and toasted dark/brown bread; with lighter notes of molasses, licorice, raisin, fig, cherry, date, smoke, wood, herbal, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Very mild herbal/woody hop, and roast/coffee bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, medium roast coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, cream, coconut, roasted nuts, toasted dark/brown bread, molasses, licorice, dark fruit, smoke, wood, herbal, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, sugars, coffee, and light fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with a solid roast/hop bitter/sweet balance, and no cloying sweetness after the finish. Slightly increasing dryness from lingering hop/roast bitterness. Medium carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/velvety, and slightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 9.5%. Overall this is an excellent flavored imperial stout. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, sugars, coffee, and light fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to drink for the ABV, with the minimally bitter/drying finish; very soft feel. Great balance of rich malts, sugars, and fruity/nutty coffee complexity; with restrained fruity yeast, and mild earthy hops against sweetness. A very enjoyable offering, and well made style example as expected. No complaints for a dessert stout style.
