Collaboration with Evil Twin Brewing

Vietnamese style coffee stout. Rich, thick mouthfeel gives way to lush sweetness with hints of coffee character followed by notes of cream, toffee, and vanilla.

Black in color with little head or lacing. Thin, slightly syrupy mouthfeel. Tastes of coffee and vanilla. The sweetness definitely masks the high abv.

16oz can poured into a snifter

A- pours a deep black color with a one-finger foamy khaki head that has short retention

S- sweet creamy vanilla & lively coffee on the nose, notes of brown sugar, vanilla cream, toffee, milk sugars, char & chocolate

T- earthy and herbal coffee up front, quickly followed by sweet notes of brown sugar, whipping cream & toffee. The finish has a distinct sweetness of caramel candy, vanilla milk sugars. Lingers of vanilla cream and toffee

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and a semi-thin finish

O- a unique sweet finish that matches well with the coffee

Thanks to Knapp85 to sharing this can.

A - Pitch black pour with micro-thin toffee colored lacing.

S - Coffee ground and sweet brown sugar aroma with a tad bit of mineral on the back end of the char.

T - Sweet brown sugar with coffee roast with slight mineral character. Nice lingering sweet brown sugar and light chocolate char.

M - Thin up front and thick on the back end.

O - Light booziness but never detracts from the overall experience of the beer. Recommended.

Poured from a can dated 8/29/19 to a diagonally cut snifter.
Body is brown near the edges, but pretty much opaque black in 98% of the volume. Head is barely a millimeter and quickly turns to a thin ring at the perimeter.
Aroma is where this beer shines. Rich dark coffee, slight vanilla and I swear it smells like creamed coffee, but I don't know how that could be.
Taste is coffee, toffee, caramel, brown sugar and damn it cream again. How do they do that? The cream sensation lingers after the swallow with a coating mouth feel, but that essence of cream is hard to forget.
A very interesting beer however its a little sweeter than what I like in a coffee stout.

Pours jet black into a snifter with a thinner deep beige head atop that is gone pretty quickly.Deeply roasted coffee ,roasted nuts, and bitter chocolate stand out most in the nose, not much sweetness detected.Dry roast upfront on the palate then some brown sugar-like sweetness that doesn't seem to fit well with the rest of the flavor profile,it actually gets a bit cloying after awhile taking away from a promising start. Two top notch breweries but not a huge fan of their collab here.

16 oz. can.
Moderate to vigorous pour yields 1/2 inch light tan head over a dark brown, near black body with minimal lacing. Nose of dark roasted malt, coffee, and brown sugar. Taste of buckets of brown sugar and "coffee light & sweet." Yikes! Way too sweet for me! Nice feel and overall, I won't be finishing this cup of brown sugar. Cheers?

70s inspired chocolate walnut colored panels. Contrasting, plush, and quick-fizzling cream of wheat colored head. This is a sweetened and processed tasting coffee derived drink (alcoholic), much like its namesake suggests. But since I'm advocating beer I'll suggest three other euphemisms (1-3) and one hyperbole (4).
(1) Basic: Mocha flavored Starbucks Almondmylk, Frappuccino, Mocha
(2) Nostalgic and Niche: Toasted marshmallow x buttered popcorn jelly beans
(3) Contemporary Critique: Go to Dunkin', ask for a frozen coffee now that mocha coolattas are passe. Request an additional half squirt mocha, toasted almond, and cream. Take home, throw in a shot of kahlua and vodka.

(4) Drizzle of Irish creme de menthe atop a nautical, sandalwood scented dollop of whipped cream. Sitting in a paper cup all day, the cup's dextose starts to oxidize and reduce making for one sweet cup of regular coffee.

Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is, well, I wish the coffee I had this morning smelled this much like coffee. Taste is of coffee, cream, light sugar, alcohol is well hidden. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall if you like coffee, buy this beer.

DATE: June 21, 2019... OCCASION: days from the closing/move and still a weekend chock-full of sporting events... GLASSWARE: Maudite snifter... pours a dark black body with barnacles of bubbles clinging all around the glass... its head gives up the effervescence rather abruptly, settling to cola-like ring of vibrant, roiling whiteness... dense, roasted coffee bean, sweet chocolate, light peat, licorice, plum, a waft of vanilla and caramel, crumbled leaf and cookie dough--is this an appertif, a desserif, or a meal in itself? first draw is thick, coating and milky, with a fair amount of heat late... the middle sits with a heavy, chewy oil can-of-a-sip, worthy swirling around the mouth... its sugar is sweet, while its vanilla and roasted coffee bean soften into a sippable, mellow profile that belies its 9.5% ABV... this came as a throw-in for a mix-pack, and a rewarding one indeed--keep doing these collabs, gentle folk... the back story to the beer adds to its worth, slightly....

I JUST wrapped up my last shift at Columbia Kettle Works 2nd Gear (CKW2G) & it was a bittersweet ending with little fanfare. I had given them two weeks notice & tonight marked the end of another era for me. I have been with them since their opening nine months ago, in September 2018, but I went from 3 nights & 1 weekend day to 1 night & with my summer off & surgery looming, it was time to call it quits. I expect that this beer will likewise be bittersweet.

From the CAN: "For our latest Two Evil collaborative brew, Two Roads’ Phil and Evil Twin’s Jeppe sampled and became enamored with a popular Vietnamese coffee drink called “Ca Phe Sua Da” (cah-fe sah dah). Thick & decadent, like a coffee milkshake, it was the inspiration for this Vietnamese-style Coffee Stout. They then traveled to the chaotic, scooter packed streets of Saigon to meet up with good friends at Heart Of Darkness Brewery. It was there that the brewers created the first batch of this collaborative beer. So raise a glass (or can), snap a selfie and enjoy a taste of Vietnam!"

I Crack!ed open the vent, only to get a spritz across my fingertips due to it being a brimful craft CAN. I kept things moving along with a slow, gentle C-Line Glug that still caused a pseudo-cascade which in turn formed just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with decent retention. Color was Very Dark Brown to Black/Opaque (SRM = > 34, < 44) with garnet highlights visible throughout. Nose had a coffee & cream quality, very evocative of Vietnamese coffee. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium, but light for an American Imperial Stout. The taste was bittersweet, bitter in terms of the coffee, but sweet in terms of the added brown sugar & cream extract. Finish was semi-sweet. Frankly, I think that it was lacking in the current style. I would have liked it far better as a "Milk/Sweet Stout", but that's just me. YMMV.
