Style: Berliner Weissbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.20%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
It’s hot baby, we needed to do something - so a sour lagrr! infused with hibiscus (and black currants, but who’s counting) seemed like something that would help beat the heat.

16oz. bottle into a Surly teku. Shared by schen9303.

Great bright strawberry color. This one certainly has a unique nose. Vinous, some cantaloupe, peppercorn and a seltzer tartness. Deep but bright at the same time. Unfortunately, as I sip this one, the first note that I get is rotten egg. Sulfur notes upfront and a light, seltzer tartness in the back. I'm not sure where the hibiscus comes in but I'm not really tasting it, although there is a light perfume-y accent somewhere in there. Pretty simple but enjoyable... except for the sulfur. Light bodied and real quaffable. Pretty much what you'd expect from the style.

Pretty solid beer overall and if this is their base berliner, I look forward to the fruited versions.

16.9 oz. bottle dated 6/29

Pours cloudy light pink-orange peach color with a quickly receding creamy frothy white foam head. Smells almost tea-like with tart acidic tannic black currants, hibiscus flower, some wheat, with mild notes of apple, pear, and cranberry. Tastes like tart, lightly acidic sour black currants, hibiscus flower, lemon, crackery wheat, with nuanced notes of apple, pear, and tannic white cranberry tea. Feels medium bodied, creamy and crisp with moderate low carbonation. Overall a real nice hibiscus black currant sour lager.

Bottled 6/29

Pours a pink wispy fluffy almost 1 finger head fades at a med pace, light lacing, super rosy hazy pink rosé colored.

Nose nice tart sour, soured mash creamy wheat, doughy raw dough, little tart lemon faint minerality, very Berlinerweisse like, touch floral component.

Taste brings big tart lemony fruit, big sour creamy wheat, lacto funk and creamy lactic sugar wheat kinda thing, touch rich minerality, raw bread dough, sour mash, just a touch of flowery hibiscus like. Finish touch flemmy, tart but dry, lingering sour mash bread dough and little tart lemony.

Mouth is med to lighter bod a little creamy, tart, touch flemmy, decent carb.

Overall not bad, a lot like a nice mild Berlinerweisse or perhaps a gose, nice sour lacto creamy lemony funk, but hibiscus is barely there at all.

L: Pours a very hazy burnt orange color with mild pinkish hues and a minimal head. There’s an almost glowing character to the appearance due to the color and haze combination.

S: Light tartness and floral notes, with an almost gose-like salinity. A bit funkier than the taste.

T: Light, refreshing mostly dry flavor, with light-to-medium tartness. Lots of raspberries, blackberries and strawberries along with a strong unmistakable hibiscus character. A little bit of malt in the finish combined with mild tartness and a lot of pleasant hibiscus. Rather clean tasting, with no yeastiness or funk to speak of.

F: Light body with medium carbonation. On a positive note, there’s no off-putting biting acidity that’s sometimes found in Berliner’s.

Thoughts: A pretty nice beer, and one of the better hibiscus beers I’ve had to date. Very clean, but in this instance I feel that this detracts from the beer’s complexity and the price tag ought to command a little more than just a drinkable Berliner.

Had on draft a few years back in the taproom.

This review is from the recent mass production and distribution of KIM bottles.

Very average and off putting. Not much flavor or balance.

Very weak in both color and mouthfeel.

Seems watered down compared to when I tried it in the taproom, way back when.

Certainly not worth the $.50 per ounce for the cost of the bottles.

I'm usually a huge fan of Singlecut products, but this one in mass distribution is very subpar for the price point.

This should be more like $11.99 for a six pack.

I fear that Singlecut is misusing their namesake to cash in on inferior quality products.
