Not a gusher, but heavily carbonated, requiring multiple short pours over time to get a glassful. Smells rather promising, with ripe banana, a bit of yeasty sandwich bread, and chocolate spread. Tastes more of chocolate sugar wafers with hints of banana, and some odd flavors coming in on a long finish; I caught a few whiffs of corn chips 30 seconds after a swallow at one point (with no food accompanying, and long past dinner). As it warmed, I also got an occasional wafted undertone of rubbing alcohol. Mouthfeel definitely suffers from the overly high carbonation; it's constantly shooting laser beams at your tongue.

I'd be willing to give this another go if a fresher batch comes out, as I fancy the concept and wanted to like it, but this is past its prime. Will update review if that ever comes to pass.

Bottle pour. The nose is overwhelmingly ripe banana, with a cocoa note. Dark in color, with a light head. Tastes like a banana/chocolate candy with a big sugary kick. Truly a dessert beer.

Got this one from Masterski this past summer. Cheers man!

From a bomber into a snifter
Batch 143

APPEARANCE: A clear brown pour produces a 2 finger, fizzy, foamy, light tan head with decent retention. Dark brown bod, transparent, with lower levels of carbonation evident. Head fades to a faint wisp and clings to the sides of the glass. A splotchy wisp remains and leaves some touches of lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Chocolate malts, sweet cream, and some definite banana is there. Notes of leather and roasted barley show up as well. Quite chocolate malt dominant and the banana is well restrained.

TASTE: Chocolate malts, some leather and cream up front, with obvious banana at the swallow. Bold and lingering finish of bitter chocolate, some burnt malts, leather, some sweet banana flavor and a touch of burnt coffee beans. This is more roasted in the finish than the nose had lead on. Banana is there, but not overpowering by any means. Rather well balanced.

PALATE: Slightly thinner body with a touch higher levels of carbonation. Creamy enough, goes down fine and finishes a touch mouth-coating.

OVERALL: Pretty well executed. Well balanced with the chocolate malt taking the lead and lending enough space for the banana to provide a well-measured supporting role. I was kind of fearing a banana bomb here, but this was pleasantly surprising. In a way, the banana flavors make it resemble a roasted hefe-weizen, if that makes any sense. The feel could be a bit fuller, but that’s a minor complaint. Pretty interesting and enjoyable. Thanks again Masterski!

Appearance: Pours with half a finger of light brown head which settled in to the edges of the glass. Active carbonation is bright, continually regenerating the head. Poured dark brown and sits black in the glass.

Smell: The yeast they used for the banana profile is surprisingly potent on the nose. Underneath that is airy milk chocolate and some heavier roasted malt tones. There is some prevalent bitter chocolate and earthy notes which I believe is coming from the yeast and chocolate additions on the finish.

Taste: Hmm, the yeast comes on way to hard on the front. Flavors of stale bread and wild, unrefined vegetables are off putting right away. Then the chocolate flavors hit which are too bitter and artificial. Heavy roasted malts linger on the back end.

Mouthfeel: Weird yeast flavors and overly bitter chocolate isn't pleasant lingering on the palate.

Overall: Did not expect this after the aroma. This beer smells tasty but the flavor is a complete miss. I appreciate their efforts to not use a bunch of artificial flavorings like the similar Rogue beers, but the yeast is overdone and chocolate just doesn't fit. Very disappointed.

Almost spicy and smokey. Very full bodied for a porter. Expected a little more banana or esther taste. I drank it a little cool so maybe that's why - but hey, it's warm out and I wanted to try it. Seems like this might improve in the bottle. Buy it, it's definitely worth it.
