Canned 12/14/18

I found this in the fridge and upon opening, I'm so excited to find it again! It's a beautiful dark thick pour. The lacing stays way after the pour is done. What it's lacking in smell now it more than makes up for in flavor. Being about 3 1/2 years old, it is super smooth. It's definitely sweeter than a Darkness or Expedition (my absolute favorite regular RIS) but it's definitely not sweet compared the usual barrel aged stouts these days. It's so thick and creamy. I forgot how well Spiteful does stouts, I need to come back to more of them. A great stout and worth picking up again if they still make it.

Batch #524 tasted in a Rastal Teku glass from a 1 pint 6 fl oz bottle on November 13, 2020. Look is nearly black with a thin tan head. Smell and taste is roasted malts. Feel is full bodied.

5/6/19 (Chicago): $5.50 12 oz canned 12/14/18 purchased 1/9/19 at Spiteful Brewing, poured into snifter. Dark black pour, generous tan creamy rich head, slowly descends leaving rich creamy lacing. Dark chocolate, roast malt, chocolate and fruity aroma. Creamy rich hop, chocolate and roasted malt taste. Balanced, not sweet or bitter. Rich creamy mouth feel, carbonation if any fades quickly very smooth east drinking. Excellent after meal / desert offering. Overall another outstanding Spiteful Brewing pour, well done!

Inky black mahoghany, thin compact layer of momentary mocha foam.
Bitter dark chocolate, dark fruit, brownies in the aroma.
Creamy textured dark chocolate, moderate lingering bitterness.
Layered dark fruit esters, rich blackened malt, deep roastiness.
Full bodied and bittersweet, dry finish. Overall very strong RIS.

For some reason, this beer has been sitting on the shelf at my local bottle shop for over a year now. I think I will have to go back and grab another to try again in a few months. Batch# 524 hand written on the side of the bottle.
This is my kind of RIS. Poured pitch black and sludgy and threw a small, brown head. One of the darker heads I've seen in recent memory. Smell is lots of roast, char, some tobacco and bakers chocolate. Flavor is everything the aroma had to offer and more. It borders on that "umami" flavor, but it's not quite soy sauce. Thick, coating mouthfeel and leaves your lips sticky. I can see the roast in this beer being a bit too much for some, but I love it.

Poured pitch black in the glass with a brown sugar colored head. Aromas were of faint berries with dark chocolate. The flavors similar - tasted like a raspberry chocolate pudding. It had that subtle underlying tartness that mixes into the chocolate. Not a sweet bomb but it does have a taste of dessert that is very rich and dark - almost savory. The hops are just subtle that adds the essence of dark bitter chocolate. The mouthfeel full and rich, quite impressive for a 10% ABV. Overall it took a little getting used to as I did not expect the mild tartness, and no, it wasn't infected.

Had on tap. Typical jet black RIS appearance with some dissipating foam. Smell is rich, full of dark chocolate, licorice, smoke, coffee, nuts, vanilla, and RIS roasted malts. Taste is smoky dark fruit upfront, giving way to malts, dark chocolate and licorice combo. Way darker tasting than smell would indicate and some thinning of flavor in the middle. Feel is thick and creamy with all textures dark.

Pours completely black, shiny and opaque. Almost no head whatsoever when the beer pours - at first I thought the seal had broken. Minimal spritzy cola colored bubbles appeared on the surface for a moment before dissipating. Beer looks like there is no carbonation ...
Smell instantly hits the nose with a strong aroma of chocolate, dark fruits - prunes, raisins, plums, dates - with a nice roasty undertone. Strong raisinet aroma - slightly sweet on the nose.
Taste follows the nose with riches of dark stone fruits in the flavor. Notes of chocolate, raisins and cocoa come through. Slightly on the sweet side, but not sweet enough to move out of the style. Hints of vanilla and then some oak/wood coming through towards the back end finishing with a slight bitterness.
Feel is surprisingly, given the appearance, carbonated - its mild to medium, but its there. Super smooth and very full bodied. Viscous. Slightly dry on the finish.
Overall - outside of the lack of any head and looking like its flat, this is an amazing RIS. I will be picking this up every time Spiteful brews it.
