Batch 16. Poured from a 22 oz. bomber into a snifter.

A - Pours an oily-looking light black, with a tan head that fizzles away in less than 10 seconds. No carbonation is present. Lacing is non-existant.

S - A strong licorice presence hits the nostrils first. Mild vanilla & coffee as well provide some balance.

T - Licorice shows up in the taste as well, but to a lesser degree than I would expect from the nose. Coffee & vanilla also enter in a bit, with a roasted or charred aftertaste. This is relatively mild-flavored beer for such a high ABV -- very drinkable for the booze.

M - A slick mouthfeel, that straddles the border between medium and thick. A heavier amount of carbonation than I would expect from a 10.5% RIS.

O - I was expecting better things from this Spiteful brew based on their GFY Stout. However, the licorice was too overpowering for my tastes. I hope they can dial it in a bit for later batches.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Viscous but not inky. A little bit glass-staining. Medium khaki head with a very thin collar.

Smell - Fudgy with some fruity and licorice aromas. Boozy and a strong roast.

Taste - Chocolate is strong. Fudgy again, but there's a substantial hop character. The yeast gives off a strong fruity flavor. Estery. Bitter.

Mouthfeel - No slouch. It's a hefty beer. Medium heavy and boozy.

Overall - Strong but very good. Bitter and boozy, but it isn't a real problem.

Pitch black in the glass with a velvety layer of mocha foam across the surface. Wispy veil left behind after the first few sips, drippy bits of lace hang on the sides after each sip and sink slowly back into the beer.

Rich toasty aroma, sticky maple syrup, chocolate, charred toast.

Creamy smooth texture, not unlike Mexican hot chocolate, medium bodied and rich. Moderate bitterness from the black malt but never astringent. Lingering bitter dark chocolate aftertaste. Slight sweetness at first with subtle fruity hints of dates or dried plum from the yeast. Balanced and very smooth, reminds me a little of Plead the 5th.

This is a great RIS, and I think i'd prefer it over GFY when not craving a hoppy stout.

Rich, silky, chocolate notes and dark roasty flavors. Sweet but not cloying. Amazing example of what a RIS should be. I really don't think it gets better than this. Like drinking silky alcohol laced chocolate fudge mocha. Spiteful kicks ass.

22 ounce bottle into a snifter.

Dark, opaque, thick looking pour, no real head or lacing. Smell is heavy on roasted malts, chocolate, some coffee. Taste follows the nose on all, plus a little vanilla. Smooth, pretty full bodied, coats the tongue.

Not a very complex beer, but very flavorful, and pretty well balanced flavors for the big malt presence. Well worth a purchase.

On tap at Norse Bar in Rogers Park - served in a 10oz tulip glass

A - Pours very dark brown / black with a nice 1 finger khaki head

S - Smells of fresh coffee and dark chocolate

T - Nice roasty coffee flavor up front and a little bit of booze as well as some cocoa flavors too. The finish is very smooth and actually makes this a pretty easy beer to drink, even at 10.5% ABV. Very little bitterness at all.

M - Definitely full bodied with a very nice creamy mouth feel. This was one of my favorite aspects of the beer. Not chewy or cloying like some big RIS's can be.

O - If you're a stout fan, this is definitely worth trying.

22oz bottle into a snifter
Batch number: I think it says 16, maybe 11

A big thanks to billakowski for sending this over as an extra!

A: Pours an opaque black with 1/2 fingers width of mocha colored head that dissipates down fairly quickly. Leaves only a few small patches of lacing.

S: Roasted malt, booze, cocoa, a sugary sweetness that reminds me of chocolate icing, subtle dark fruits. Very nice.

T: Big roasted malt, accompanied by a dessert like sweetness and dark chocolate. I also get significant dark fruit characters and some coffee notes.

M/D: Smooth, full bodied but could be a touch thicker, ABV is completely well masked and drinkability is very good.

O: Overall, this one caught be my surprise. It is a really good beer. I definitely would recommend this one. Thanks again billakowski for the great extra!

Poured from the bottle a dark brownish-black with two fingers of mocha head. Sheets of lacing left behind.

Aroma of chocolate, licorice, dark fruits, and a hint of booze.

The taste was much bolder than the aroma. Opened with a big hit of dark coffee and roasted malts followed by chocolate, and cocoa. Some boozy warmth from the 10.5% abv in the finish.

Medium bodied and smooth with a lighter carbonation.

A solid R.I.S. from the folks at Spiteful. I'll definitely have this one again.

22oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

(A)- Pours a dark pitch black color. Minimal tan froth.

(S)- A deep roasty raisin aroma combined with some dusty cocoa. Maybe some subtle licorice at it warmed up.

(T)- Lots of dark fruits and raisin meets that almost dusty cocoa on the backend.

(M)- A smooth carbonation level meets a well rounded dark fruit and roasted components.

(O)- Its actually a pretty solid RIS with an easy drinking feel despite the ABV and style.

Served in a Local Option cervoise.

What better imagery for a Russian imperial stout than a zombified Soviet? This stuff pours a bleak obsidian topped by a finger of sandstone foam. The nose comprises roasted malts, light coffee, and dark chocolate. Usual suspects, indeed. The taste brings in more of the same, though there is a strong bitterness pervading throughout. In addition, a harsh vein of strident anise creeps in and causes quite the ruckus, tossing garbage cans through Italian restaurant windows and setting random buses ablaze when not engaged in widespread tagging. It's a terrible affair for my poor little tongue, which has no immediate escape at hand. The body is a hefty medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a goopy feel. Hell, when I poured this stuff, it resembled Nestle Quik so closely I thought it had spent too much time in some unknown freezer or something. Overall, what could have been a pretty sold stout is sullied by that contentious and acrid bit of anise and bitterness. A shame, really...
