Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.20%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Out God Damn Pigeon Porter was brewed with our friends from across the pond in mind. We use traditional English Amber malt, but being the unruly Americans we are, we put our own happy twist on things. One of our favorite hops, Simcoe, was added late in the bail. This delightful porter will take your mind off the everyday nuisances of living in a big city, especially those f-ing pigeons!

What would a "spiteful" brewery do, but give us a porter that pushes the envelope- one that flirts with the roastiness of stout but reins back on the tethers of cream, smoothness, and milkshake to nestle the taste into the normal porter realm.

Dark, devious and strong with robust character, both the look and the scent resonate with French-press coffee, dry cocoa, burnt toast and scorched caramels. It is sounds like a "stout" description, then that's because this porter oversteps its boundary for effect! Its dry and foamy lather sits like bitter coffee on the early palate while a counterpart of burnt marshmallow hurries toward a more mellow middle taste.

Soothing sweetness rises as its acrid roast subsides and the beer rests in a deep toffee, coffee, and bitter chocolate realm. But as the sweetness fades, those tawny, tangy and acidic roast flavors emerge- this time not in taste but in a creamy campfire texture that's just as challenging as it is rewarding. Pushing, pushing, and pushing into a finish that's surprisingly drinkable.

Medium-full early, the beer sheds its early sweetness and associated weight and prefers a toasty, roasty finish in much the way that stout does. But its balance of medium-bodied coffee, bitter chocolate and burnt sugars make it a highly fortified porter instead. Well done Spiteful brewers!

Black body, ample rising tan foam, leaves behind some spindly lace.

Roasty rich coffee aroma, nice. Possibly some unique character from the Simcoe, hard to tell.

Bitter and roasty flavors of black malt, dry coffee, nutty almond and chicory. Finish is very dry and moderately bitter, not much hop flavor just bitterness. Medium bodied and smooth. A tasty porter brewed with English Amber malt and American Simcoe hops. Well balanced and drinkable, considering the higher abv.

Served in a nonic pint glass.

Gotta have something to go with these skewers, and this one jumped out at me first. It pours a deep, dark black-brown topped by over a finger of dark khaki foam. The nose comprises roasted malts, mild coffee, a hint of dark chocolate powder, and a kiss of greenery. The taste brings in more of the same, with the greens attempting a full balance against the roast and chocolate, but not fully achieving such a status. The body is a lithe medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, a solid porter, one that went pretty well with the salmon skewers I was eating without smothering their not-so-robust flavor. Good times.

16oz can poured into a teku. The can states that this batch features simcoe hops and wow they didnt skimp on their usage. The smell is all hops: dank, herbal, catty, citrus and fruity/rindy. There is hardly any noticeable roast or porter qualities to be found. By all means this is pretty much a black ipa. Even the flavor is all hops. Its bitter with rindy resin, pith, pulp and herbs. Not a bad beer but really not something id call a porter.

Pours a clear dark brown color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Decent retention and good lacing. Smells of maple syrup, coffee, roasted malt, sweet malt, alcohol, slight spicy hops, and yeast. Fits the style of an American Porter. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with a low carbonation level. Tastes of maple syrup, coffee, roasted malt, sweet malt, alcohol, slight spicy hops, and yeast. Overall, average appearance, good complexity, blend, and great feel.
