• Look – 4.25 – Default, drank out of the can.
• Smell – 4.25 – Default, can’t smell much except a smokey porter.
• Taste – 4.25 – Great taste. A nice porter with a small bit of smoke. Not over the top, just about right.
• Feel – 4.5 – Medium to full mouthfeel, very smooth.
• Overall – 4.25 – Really enjoyed, good coiffing dark beer, not too heavy on the smoke.

330ml can poured into a tulip glass

Look: Very, very dark and opaque - absolutely nothing comes through when held up to the light. Plenty of bubbly, frothy tan head though, which took an absolute age to dissipate. Massive amounts of lacing as a result.

Smell: Despite being served at ambient temperature, the smell was best described as disappointing or, alternatively, barely there. Sure, there's a hint of smokiness but very little else even after a bit of time to 'breathe'.

Taste: Fares rather better here - dark roasted malts, dark chocolate, hints of peat and smoke with a side-order of earthy hoppiness. The aftertaste is a glorious combination of malt, hops and peat.

Feel: Pretty light for a porter, almost insipid if I was feeling particularly uncharitable (but I'm not) - even so, it would benefit from a bit more body. Surprisingly smooth, and the smokiness isn't done to death.

Overall: OK, but I was expecting something a bit more robust. Even so, if you like your beers smoky without being a full-on rauchbier-type thing then this is worth a look. Doubly so if you like stouts and porters even if it is a bit on the thin side. Worth a try, but really needs more body, more alcohol or, ideally, more of both. My ratings reflect the nature of the beer - it's a bit all over the place but not necessarily the worse for it.

Beige head, a large but short-lived.
Delicate aroma of chocolate and coffee grain. You may feel a slight smoke, but not from the smokehouse, it is rather smoke slaked, wet tree.
The taste is a little coffee, chocolate and smoke. Rocked Smog is acidic and has an intense bitterness.

Tried this from a can straight from the fridge at home. I thought it improved as it got less cold. The aftertaste is long and toasted. The colour is great. The head disappears quickly.

CAN
Garnet black with loose, lumpy cappuccino froth. 3.75
Lots of chocolate and some phenolic smoke on the nose. 3.75
Chocolate malted milkshake, peaty little hit of smoke, then some fizzy Yoohoo-type chocolate, cola and some slight earthy hops. 3.75
Roasty sweet end and faint cocoa linger.
Fizzy, just past light, round. 3.75

-- Honestly, I don’t know what to make of a British porter at 5.4%: not quite sessionable, not strong. It’s a bit thin (though maybe not the for the ABV?) and dies on the finish. They want the smoke to make it interesting but there’s not enough of it to do that. Drinkable, but ultimately dull. Wisp more than smog. 3.75

Solid dark brown colour. Smells like earthy hops and smokey. Tastes sweet, with smoke, wood and toasted grains. Malty sweet finish.

Would I buy this beer again? Yes.

Smooth, very rich, gentle - lightly smoked but great depth. Like Dark Isle
