Smells just of malt and a hoppy bitterness. Taste is a bit stout like with molasses and a touch of tar together with vanilla, butterscotch and a hint of citrus. Nice mouth-feel: not too heavy. Not heavily carbonated. It says it is a bitter but it does not seem very bitter-like to me.

Coming in a 500ml brown bottle; BB 28/01/2015, served mildly chilled in a straight imperial pint glass. According to the back label, this beer has won a certain “Gold Award SIBA East Bottled Beer Competition”, not specifying “when”, however.

A: pours a bright, dark copper colour with rather mild carbonation and a thin off-white foamy head to last.
S: on the nose, the abundant feed of mixed maltiness (caramely, nutty, and biscuity all at once) is underlined by secondary notes of citric and flowery hops (English Challengers, Goldings and Fuggles are used, with more F. than G. identified on the nose), as well as a modest touch of yeasty acidity and even milder sulphuric notes. Given a swirl, still the sweet toasted nuts are a main feature, as the aroma retains its intensity and robustness.
T: quite effervescent on the entry, the flavour has robust caramely and biscuity malts with a decent touch of dark fruits lagging behind, followed by a slowly developing flow of bitter-sweetness as of toasted nuts, moderate earthy hop bitterness, and lightly acidic+sulphuric esters, finishing faintly spicy and mildly-flavoured. The flavour profile retains its consistency rather well; from the start to the finish, nothing much has been added and taken away.
M&O: slightly effervescent on the entry but the fizziness is full of very fine bubbles, thus not that harsh on the palate; the body remains full-ish as far as 5.5%abv. is concerned, while the flavour in general is decent and compact, not in any sense bold or very delicious, though. I actually wonder what the other fellow competitors were, which it overcame to be awarded that “Gold Award SIBA East”… That said, this is still a decent offer from the proudly independent brewery, Elgood’s, and I look forward to trying it in its cask-conditioned form.

500ml Bottle: best before 20 Jan 2013, poured into a UK pint sleeve @ home on 12 Dec 2012.

Chestnut red/brown body: clear and clean. The head was a full blanket of white foam with lacing on the sides.

Malts rule the aroma and taste: semi-sweet and fairly rich in depth, the hops giving the beer a bite and crispness that settles the malty sweetness down nicely. Those Challenger, Goldings and Fuggles Hops also ensure a floral and nutty feel is present within the maltiness of the body. Easy to drink and a pleasure to do so: I like the semi-sweet maltier brews and fits the profile well: full bodied and flavoursone, well done Elgood's.
