Pours a cloudy dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma and Taste is of dark malted barley and chocolate malts, yeast and light bitter notes. Palate is a medium body with soft carbonation. Finish the same as taste. Overall a very nondescript beer, just ok, nothing to see here, move along.

A: The beer is clear dark brownish red in color and has a slight amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high tan head that died down, leaving a thin head covering the surface and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light aromas of dark malts are present in the nose along with some hints of roasted malts.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste is mostly filled with flavors of dark malts and has a light amount of bitterness along with faint hints of roasted malts and floral hops.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and a somewhat thin and watery on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer goes down very easy but seems very light-even for a schwarzbier-especially in the mouthfeel.

I poured this beer from a 1.6 fluid ounce bottle, into a tall tasting glass

The beer pours to a dark mahogany body and a tan head

The beer smells of chocolate milk chocolate grain and a faint floral and herbal scent

The taste is a faint chocolate roasted grain light coffee in a bit of pancake syrup

Thin and medium carbonation

Not a bad beer overall. However the mouth feel of this beer please me wishing something a little bit more substantial for this style. The beer seems more like a dark lager then a black lager

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a mug glass.

A: The beer is a deep brown color, with a large off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a spotty lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains lager yeast, roasted malts, some coffee and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out with some a mild coffee flavor and some smokiness. Then some breadiness comes in from lager yeast and a hearty but not too heavy malt character. The hops presence is very mild but provides a good balance. The after-taste is slightly bready.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, although there are better choices in the style, this is a solid beer worth drinking for a while.

From the 3 Beards website:
A giant of a man with a formidable beard enters the local tavern and rests his axe on the bar top. Does he order a watered down beer or something as big and bold as the life he lives? Lumberjack Black Lager is just such a beer. With its toasty flavors and clean, refreshing finish, it is bound to make a man out of any beer drinker, and a fan out of the manliest!

Malt Selections: Munich, Vienna and Black malts
Hop Selections: Tetnang
Color: Dark Brown/Black
Mouthfeel/Body: Medium/Full
Bitterness Units (IBU): 22-24
Food Companions: Red meat, roasted meats, barbeque, stews, root vegetables

My review:
Chunky and lumpy head. Plenty of spotty lace (starts off chunky, but fades). The color is reddish brown--not nearly as black as most Schwarzbier. Light shines through easily.

The smell is earthy with a darker malt background.

The taste is like an overly hopped Brown Ale. There's a lack of bitterness from the darker malts, but it's made up with a stronger hop presence. Despite the comments from the brewer, I find this beer to fall on the thin side. The aftertaste is biscuity, with a strong toasted flavor.

Reviewed from notes. Had this at the Marlboro, MA festival.

A - Pours a not quite crystal clear reddish brown hue. Not the typical black of a schwarz. Thin quarter inch head fades slowly.

S - Aroma is fairly straight forward, earthy, lightly sweet and some mild roast.

T - Taste is as someone else said, a mildly hoppier brown ale, which is not really what I'm looking for in a Schwarzbier, taste falls thin, too strong of hops, with some yeasty/bready aftertaste.

M - Mouthfeel is a touch on the thin side, though decent carbonation.

O - Overall, a relatively mediocre beer. Well, its average, but not something I would go out of my way to seek out.

Boston Beer Summit. Bottle, I believe. Poured quite dark. I definitely smelled lager yeast. Also smelled pretty full of sweetened roasted malt. The flavor was sweeter than I was anticipating. Needs a bit more bitterness, I think. Tasted of sweet, dark malt, light roast and some chalk. A hint of black licorice. Body was pretty light. Did not love this.

Bought on closeout for $1.49! So not expecting much. A local brewery product I was interested to sample.

Poured from the 22 oz bomber into a Samuel Adams nonick.

a: Clear ruby-copper with a two inch tall tan head which receded to thick rocky surface foam and dense lacing.

s: Vaguely of dark fruit, rather sharp in the nose.

t: A sort of fruity bitterness of indeterminate nature. Some smoke in the aftertaste.

m: Light, bordering on watery. Lighter than expected given the appearance.

o: Not as bad as I feared, a decent representation of the style. Might work ok as a dinner drink. Next time I hit Yankee Spirits (have not seen it anywhere else) if they still have some left I might be tempted to buy one or two more, since at 75 cents a glass it certainly beats most of the mass produced additive beers in that price range.
