Bottle poured into a Founders bell tulip.
Appearance was more that of a porter or English stout than a RIS, dark brown body, topped with a finger of foamy tan head that receded to a thick ring, lacing the glass adequately. Aroma of light roast, dark malts, grains, tobacco. Taste was benign, and on the bland side; much like the aroma, light roastiness, again, more characteristic of an English stout or porter, dry dark malts, ash, toasted grains. Body was medium, carbonation was moderate. An average beer, not necessarily bad, but overall lacking in flavor and really any unique character.

Got this at the local liquor store down the road.
From a bottle into a snifter
Best before 15-10-2017
IBU: 65
BIttering: Galena _ Aroma: Willamet
APPEARANCE: Pours thin brown and yields a three finger, looser looking, noisy, foamy, light brown head with decent retention. Seal brown in color with medium levels of carbonation evident. Head fades to a wisp and foamy ring. A splotchy wisp remains leavind some dots of lacing down the glass. Way too thin and light for the stlye.
SMELL: Leather, licorice, with caramel and toffee notes. Light notes of wood and sweet cream as well, but mostly leather and tobacco. Not bad, but not that great either.
TASTE: Leather, licorice and tobacco, much like the nose, with some caramel sweetness at the swallow. Cigarettes as well. Bolder finish with more tobacco and leather, some ashy flavors, and burnt, charred malts. A touch of floral bitterness lingers on the palate as well. Burnt, ashy and leathery. Not quite my style of imperial stout.
PALATE: Medium body with slightly higher levels of carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down fine and finishes sticky.
OVERALL: The label claims this is a Russian imperial stout, but the beer says it's an export stout. As an export stout, this isn't all that bad, but as an RIS, this is pretty sub-par. Too light and thin, with too much tobacco and leather. This would need more roasted and chocolaty flavors to be able to compete with the best in the style. A decent beer in itself, but a below average imperial stout. Pass.

A black beer with a fine lacey head.
The smell is roasty with hints of molasses, coffee and candisugar. A very mild smell that is nowhere sharp or aggresively roasted.
Taste is lightly roasted which has molasses, dark coffee and dark pure chocolate. The roast is not aggresive, the base of the light and balanced beer shines through. The dark malts do not dominate the beer, but gives the beer a mild character. The beer has some bitter, but the listed 65 EBU is hard to find. A very balanced stout, but a little too subtle for me.
