330 ml Firmabier - Pours dark black with a large lightly tanned foamy head. Medium carbonation. Nice lacing. Smell - smoky, chocolate, faint dark stony fruits, roasted malts. Taste - Sweet, smoky, caramel, roasted malts with a dry bitter finish. Nice smoked porter.

Black, almost opaque, pour, surprisingly translucent for an imperial stout. Not much head or lacing. Smells of caramel, dark chocolate, coffee, figs, dark cherries (though the fruit aroma is quite feint). The taste follows through, with notes of caramel, maple syrup, coffee, dark chocolate and raisins. Very smooth mouthfeel and medium body. Not bad.

donkere body met meekleurend schuimpak geurend naar rook en iets zoutigs
bij het drinken volle warme fenolen en esters stevige mout wals dan licht waterige in de afdronk maar de alcohol brandt fijn na, een lekkere stevige doordrinker

On tap in Amsterdam at Jopen - definitely worth a visit if you're in town! Note on style: this is an imperial porter, not a stout. No technical tasting notes from me... nice roasty malt, highly drinkable, true to style - this is a very good beer.

Appearance: pitch black with a thick tan and long lasting head leaving awesome lacing on the glass.

Aroma: coffee and dark chocolate, roasted malts and ash. A bit hoppy in the back. Maybe there are some delicate notes of port? I smell something there, but I don't know if it's that or someting else. Overall very pleasant and rich aroma.

Taste: big roastiness followed by dark chocolate and coffee notes. Warming, not so strong alcohol aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied, medium to high carbonation. Probably would be better with softer carbonation.

Overall: Good Imperial Stout. There are no port notes in the taste, or they're covered by the roastiness and dark chocolate. Still a nice drink and can be recommended.

Enjoyed in a teku glass.

Got this one from the Duvel guy down the road.

From a bottle into a snifter
Imperial stout with port

APPEARANCE: A careful pour come out dark brown and yields a two finger, medium looking, fluffy tan head with very good retention. Clear brown body with very high levels of carbonation evident for the style. Head fades to a thick foam cap with some good staying power. A half foamy wisp remains leaving some lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Roasted and charred malts, dark chocolate, some light tobacco, leather, and oak on the nose. No real port, per se. Medium strength.

TASTE: Roasted notes, charred malts, some leather and dark chocolate at the swallow. Bolder and lingering finish of roasted grain, leather, bitter dark chocolate, some cocoa powder and light oak. Alcohol as well. No real port wine flavors per se, but the other flavors are pretty nice as it is.

PALATE: Medium body with medium carbonation. A touch light on the palate, creamy enough, goes down fine and finishes slightly mouth-coating. Some heat lingers.

OVERALL: This is solid. One of the better imperial stouts from the small Dutch breweries around now, which, admittedly, isn't saying much. There wasn't a lot in terms of the port barrels here, but perhaps that's a good thing, as the base beer was pretty good on its own. Check it out if you're in the area. Cheers!

Black colour with a modest but steady head. Smell of malt, wine and coffee. These flavours return in the taste, together with some wood, chocolate and dark fruits. Medium bodied and quite smooth. This is a fine beer, but with an abv of 9.0, i expect more body and intensity in smell and taste. It tends to stay a bit too much on the safe side.
