500ml

Bottled 1/19/15

Big thanks to Wilson for tossing me this a couple months back in a great box of beer and grub from the Carolinas. Oblivion is crimson with ruby red highlights when backlit. Tiny carbonation bubbles rush from every surface of the glass up to the mocha foam. The head shows good staying power at a fingers height while clinging clumpily to the glass.

The nose has a very interesting, enjoyable play on sweet and sour. Damp oak and berries are the first from the glass, the oak being bold yet well integrated. I don't get dates as a whole but there is a dark sugary sweetness that I'm assuming is from the dates. A touch of red wine vinegar adds sharpness while a vague fruitiness balances with sweetness.

What a well crafted, balanced, delicious libation. The blackberries are certainly noticeable throughout, tart upfront before becoming softly jammy on the finish. The damp oak adds some tannins while the dates add a deep, dark sugar sweetness and depth. Red wine vinegar brings a soft acidic tartness while the wine barrels add a vague fruitiness on the backend. This is a really good beer. The tartness kicks in on the start while the jammy blackberries clean up the finish.

The mouthfeel is exactly as it should be. A spritzy carbonation keeps things moving while the sweet and sour play off each other. The bubbles become even spritzier on the finish before a tannic dryness takes over. The actual weight of the body is just under medium and all aspects seem to fit well. Nicely done!

Wicked Weed does some very cool things with their barrel program and never fail to keep things interesting. This is one of the better beers I've had from that sour program. The oak finish is properly done, the sweet and sour play very nicely, and the mouthfeel is spot on which is a huge component of barrel aged beers in my opinion. Recommended. Hey you got a nice dog, man!

500ml bottle poured into a teku

A - A dark brown ruby color. Good amount of carbonation with about a 2 finger sand colored head that dissipated into a small white ring around the glass. Small spots of lacing.

S - Tart unripe plums along with blackberries, sour apples and some vinegar. A Merlot wine aroma is apparent and I pick up some oak.

T -Starts off a bit of malt then blasts with tart unripe plums, sour apples, and blackberries. A Merlot wine flavor wraps around the tartness and beings in a bit of oak. Not sour, but a nice sweet and very tart combination.

M - A medium feel with ample carbonation gives the beer a fizzy, bubbly quality. Drinkable, and refreshing.

O - Wicked Weed has impressed me with a couple of their offerings. I would like to try many more from this brewery.

Sour red ale aged in wine barrels with blackberries and dates. Poured from a bottle into a Wicked Weed tulip. The pour is dark ruby red, very clear, and sports a nice head for a sour ale. Lots of sour fruity notes on the nose. Apples, black cherries, cider, freshly-squeezed orange juice, and a faint sweet, creamy, oaky, vanilla-like note.

Light-medium body, firm feel, and pleasant sour flavor. Some winey, grape-like flavors up front, apple juice, then sour notes take over. Slightly lactic, slightly fruity, but not so aggressive that it becomes unpalatable. There's a slightly oaky, almost char-like flavor underneath (dates?). I find it a nice complement to the sourness. Lots of sour notes and some dark fruit notes (raisins?) on the finish.

Overall, another top-notch sour from Wicked Weed. I just love their sours. They're nice and tart, but not so sour that you can't finish a bottle by yourself (*cough*Upland*cough). I look forward to picking up some more bottles the next time I visit Asheville.

Pours a deep Amber with white head, nice retention and decent amount of lacing. Nose has deep berry flavor paired with a touch of funk, black cherry, mild lacto notes. The taste is features dark berries and cherries with some fruity sweetness. This is balanced by a delicate sour character. Finish is clean. Mouthfeel has moderate carbonation and medium body. Overall, the high abv is well hidden, tartness is there but nothing over the top, and plenty of fruit character. Very nice.

Looks and smells very similar to la folie with a more lingering head. The taste is mineral, dark fruit, lactic acid. The mountain heel is almost too carbonated, but light to medium body. The after taste is dry and vineous like a red wine. This is a great beer, but honestly, I expected a little more..
