At Wicked Weed we have over 250 wine, bourbon and rum barrels full of aging beer. After brewing this 9.7% alcohol authentically Belgian ale we felt it needed an American touch, so we aged the beer in Kentucky Bourbon barrels for four months. This created a confluence of big American flavor and silky smooth Belgian aromas.

Via an oddly volumed brown bottle, containing the less than standard 12.7 fluid ounces, came the pour into a clear glass Imperial pint mug. With the modest off-white head, it filled the vessel almost perfectly. Belgian triple and oak tannins arise to the nose, just as expected. The brew is hazy, dull and a bit darker than copper-amber. Maybe not murky, but it is opaque. The taste is a nice blend of a Belgian style strong ale and a bourbon barrel aged one. There's a caramel sweetness that gets first noticed by the tongue. So, there's plenty, maybe a little too much malty sweetness, at least for the style. Thankfully, the yeastiness of a typical Belgian is subdued and doesn't overtake the other layers of flavor. Same holds true of the woody tannins of a barrel aged brew. In short, this is a wonderful merging of two major beer tastes, each that almost always dominate to the degree that no nuances can be found. Here, they collaborate to make a unique flavor. But, overall, it's too sweet to be an excellent brew. Even though the high ABV is very well-hidden, the mouthfeel is only average, but credit given for carrying this much flavor, sweetness and alcohol competently. The glass lacing is less than average, but likely as good as others with this level of alcohol.

Pours hazy golden amber orange with a creamy white foam head. Smells like woody oak, bourbon, coconut, vanilla, banana, hint of orange citrus, coriander, clove spice, caramelized bready malts, with floral earthy herbal hops. Tastes like bourbon, oak barrel, coconut, vanilla, banana, some orange citrus, coriander, clove spice, caramelized malt, toffee, with floral earthy herbal hops. Feels medium bodied, creamy with smooth moderate carbonation. Overall a nice bourbon barrel aged Belgian strong pale ale.

Bottle dated 3/2017:
Pours a light amber with a significant bit of haze. The head is muted on initial pour, but a thick just off-white foamy ring does persist.
Nose is a mix of orchard fruit - lightly tart apple, pear - and a whisp of whiskey, initially. A little syrup sweetness seeps in with warmth. The combination eventually yields a little apple wine-like note. There is also a bit of a floral nature to this beer, and when I search for something that might indicate a countering bitterness, I get a bit of what I assume is the barrel wood.
Taste starts sweet, with the apple and bourbon combining into a sort of easy-drinking apple brandy flavor. The beer has a heavy tickling carbonation that gets a little bite from an alcohol heat. A bit of caramel-vanilla sweetness battles a little presumed barrel-tang tartness in the back of the taste. This leads the apple brandy into more of an apple/pear cider impression (with a little vanilla splash at the end).
The barrel aging is fairly deftly done so that it doesn't overpower the base pale ale. It's noticeable without overpowering the flavors. Unfortunately for me, the beer tends a little sweet, and I'd like a little bitterness later in the taste to balance it.

a barrel aged belgian strong that a bit boozy and plenty sugary, one was enough, but i thought this was a little something different and a pretty tasty brew overall. murky pale beige to yellow color, really thick for something named golden, and with a tall white belgian looking head that saves it from a visual appeal standpoint. aroma is sweet and woody, almost bourbon, but im not sure its a whiskey barrel, could just be straight oak with vanilla and sugary sweetness from the added sugar not fermented out of the base beer and some tricky esters in the belgian yeast, which is quite robust in both aroma and flavor. pink and white necco wafers, vanilla sugar, and notes of pear and apples from the yeast, lots of lingering sugar and tons and tons of wheaty sort of body which only serves to extend the sugar and the booze this finishes with. fun and interesting, but not as delicious and high quality overall as i am used to from wicked weed, but that said, its more like a wood aged wheatwine or something, an its nice for the autumn. cool to see these guys back here with draft in the colorado market, its been a little while...
