330ml bottle - Bullock's Wine & Spirits in Marietta, Georgia.
Appearance: Pours a very pale, light yellow body with glunky-looking, suspended particulate matter. Smallish, whitish head.
Smell: A lightly sweetish, honey-tinged scent of golden barley housing minute notes smelling of citrus, chewing gum, pear nectar, white wine, a hint of grain, florals and peppery clove.
Taste: Honeyish, rock candied pale malts, moderately bready with a lightly grainy backing. As with the nose, spicy phenolics and fruity notes abound, still with apple, pear and banana. White pepper, powdered clove with some well warming alcohol. Spicy-sweetish, lightly boozy finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. Lightly creamyish mouthfeel.
Overall: Decent enough, but not outstanding. Though, I will say it's better than a great many American-born Belgiany brews by a fair margin.

Instead of siding with the religious sector that's largely responsible for flavors like stronger, golden ale of Belgium, the more secular or commercial brewers who think its disingenuous to mimic the monks beers when not brewed by them, an anti-religious genre of labels emerge, yet the taste is synonymous with the quality of that out of the abbey.
Heavy on weizen character, the resemblance to German-styled wheat beer starts with its hazy golden hue. Carrying a thick and frothy cap, its scent is redolent of banana and clove with bread and white wine underpinnings. Its taste is sweet, bready and fruity in the sugar cookie realms.
With the flavors rolling across the middle, the banana, papaya, and pawpaw flavors reveal a citrusy lemon and orange character playing secondary to the tropical and orchard fruits. Mild cider acidity plays into a light chardonnay character before closing with a simmering peppery taste with clove, vanilla and a mint-like hop after-tow.
Richer and breadier than true Belgian counterparts, the resemblance to hefeweizen continues. Bready, lightly sugary and medium-bodied, the beer's finish is warm with vinous alcohol and the cooling evaporation the vanilla and mint carry. Lightly bittered the after-palate is peppery and warm with a medium-length linger of straw and grass.

Thanks to my mom who picked this up at the brewery while in Asheville. Bottled April 8, 2016 and served cold into a pint glass. This version is advertised as 9.0% ABV.
Appearance - Moderately pale golden straw color that is very hazy and full of carbonation. Forms a nice finger and a half of fluffy white head on top with good retention. Some sparse lacing left behind.
Smell - Some yeast, with a grassy lingering background and just a hint of wood burning smoke. A little candi sugar for a well rounded aroma. Not much fruit and a bit of a dank smell as well. Some banana thrown in for good measure.
Taste - Not quite like the nose, additional smoke, some yeasty and a steady graininess. Fruit is low but maybe a hint of pear in the backing flavors. Banana and clove continues here too.
Mouthfeel - Smooth, well carbonated, light body but substantial presence. Well crafted.
Overall - Bedeviled Golden Strong is a fine Belgian Pale Ale, with a nice use of smoke and hefeweizen flavors to complement traditional Belgian pale Ale flavors and aromas.

Bottle dated 12/19/16:
I was being careful on the pour and did notice a little trail of yeast near the end of the pour and tried to decant. The beer has a light haze to it (maybe chill), but I can easily see my finger on the other side of the glass as I grab it. Fairly lively carbonation yields a nice couple of fingers of white foam. Thick tufts of soapy head collects at the edge. A sheet of this stuff is left against the back wall as I take a sip.
The nose has a nice spiced note to it up front, almost like a spiced white ale (without the wheat notes). I get clove mainly mixed in with Belgian yeast. With a few whiffs, I start to notice a lighter hay-like note in there as well.
Taking a sip, there is a little prickly carbonation but also an alcohol bite that hit the front of my tongue. As the beer hits the middle of the tongue, I start getting the spice and yeast from the nose. As the beer continues its journey, I start to notice a grassy to maybe lightly herbal bitterness. The beer loses its opening bite here and fills the palate better.
For most of the glass, the balancing to slightly bitter-leaning nature of the beer is enjoyable. However, the taste doesn't end there and the yeast comes on again and I get apple and pear. As I get near the bottom, these two phases blend together and the fruit ends up slightly more prominent, but not as sweet as when I noticed it separately.
I appreciate this beer but wish the bitter phase I got in the middle of the beer early was the flavor I got more of. As I sipped and didn't analyze for a review, this was a fine beer beer to sip and enjoy.

Poured from an 11.2 OZ bottle into a tulip glass. The appearance is a slightly cloudy yellow with a small white head. The aroma is light citrus. The taste is non-descript but hides the 9% ABV well.
