Instead of siding with the religious sector that's largely responsible for flavors like stronger, golden ale of Belgium, the more secular or commercial brewers who think its disingenuous to mimic the monks beers when not brewed by them, an anti-religious genre of labels emerge, yet the taste is synonymous with the quality of that out of the abbey.

Heavy on weizen character, the resemblance to German-styled wheat beer starts with its hazy golden hue. Carrying a thick and frothy cap, its scent is redolent of banana and clove with bread and white wine underpinnings. Its taste is sweet, bready and fruity in the sugar cookie realms.

With the flavors rolling across the middle, the banana, papaya, and pawpaw flavors reveal a citrusy lemon and orange character playing secondary to the tropical and orchard fruits. Mild cider acidity plays into a light chardonnay character before closing with a simmering peppery taste with clove, vanilla and a mint-like hop after-tow.

Richer and breadier than true Belgian counterparts, the resemblance to hefeweizen continues. Bready, lightly sugary and medium-bodied, the beer's finish is warm with vinous alcohol and the cooling evaporation the vanilla and mint carry. Lightly bittered the after-palate is peppery and warm with a medium-length linger of straw and grass.

Poured from an 11.2 OZ bottle into a tulip glass. The appearance is a slightly cloudy yellow with a small white head. The aroma is light citrus. The taste is non-descript but hides the 9% ABV well.

12oz bottle poured into a pint, bottled 4/8/16

A- pours a hazy golden color with a huge frothy white head that retains long after the pour, leaving some nice lacing behind

S- spicy Belgian yeast gives aromas of clove, peppercorn, banana, ripe pear, must and phenolic notes

T- spicy and peppery up front with big yeasty and musty notes, followed by a mixture of banana, clove, pear and melon. The finish is phenolic, with hints of lemon & pepper on the linger

M- medium-heavy body with light carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that turns creamy into the finish, ABV is hidden well

O- this is pretty much everything you look for in this style, delicious beer

Bought a bottle at the Beer Shop in East Longmeadow. The beer pours with a murky golden yellow color with thick lacing on the sides and a thin head that is maintained throughout the drinking. Aromas were thick with grassy yeast and an almost flowery honey spice. Taste followed the nose with a light bready flavor mixed with some fruits, cloves, and spices. Generally sweet in taste. The mouthfeel to this beer is slightly heavy and creamy with a good carbonation. Overall, this was fantastic.

Mostly clear, pale gold beer with a nice white head. The head fades quickly but the beer is decently carbonated and continues to have bubbles rising and around the edge of the glass. The smell is is mild but is nice. There is a nice yeast and bananas aroma with a mild sweetness. The flavor is slightly tart fruits with the yeast and ripe banana flavors also present. There is a nice sweetness which balances the beer and a quite nice bitter hop finish. The alcohol shows up at the end with a nice little warming feeling. Quite a nice beer.

I began NBS (# 595) with Duvel, so I guess that it is apropos that I am now Bedeviled at this point in the day.

From the bottle: "Heat-waved visions of liquid gold bewitch our will for any other. Our desire for the spice and warmth of Belgian tradition is made more intense by her smoldering touch. We give in and allow her to quench our bedeviled thirst."

I Pop!ped the cap, but seeing the lees in the punt, I was VERY gentle in decanting the beer. I then gave it a gentle in-glass swirl to raise a brief finger of foamy, bone-white head that quickly fell back to wisps. Color was a Straw-Yellow (SRM = > 2, < 4) with NE-quality clarity. Nose had a mild musty funk, much akin to the Duvel that began the day. Impressive! Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, but with a champagne-like effervescence, Man, it was scrubbing on my poor, beaten tongue and it felt really, really good. Speaking of really good, I was fully digging the taste. It was clearly yeast-driven, with notes of banana and black pepper along with the trademark old newspaper-like mustiness. Needless to say, it was a very dry beer, very quenching and very big. One was plenty. In fact, I put the last two fingers of it, still in the bottle, back in the reefer, to allow the lees to settle back down before a last pour or two.
