Notes: Pernicious implies influence that is harmful in a way not easily noticed. This beer is harmful, not because of overwhelming hop bitterness, but because its balanced brightness insidiously ruins your expectations for all other IPAs. This hop delivery vehicle is crafted to enjoy fresh and often and because of its drinkability and clean finish you’ll never look at IPAs the same again. The harm is done.

Brewed 1-29-18. The losers and haters want to give Wicked Weed bad scores because they sold out. F that. This is the same delicious dankness they have been brewing since day 1. Get a 4 pack and enjoy one of the best beer in America.

Poured from a bottle dated 9/24/15 into a duvel tulip. The pour produces a nice white head that leaves a decent amount of lace. The liquid is a hazy gold, and lighter than I would have expected.

Aroma is amazing! Shockingly floral, with hints of incredibly juicy citrus. There's a very subtle hint of a dank weed aroma floating on the edge of it. Then just a hint of a lightly toasted, sugary malt. An amazingly delicate and seductive aroma.

The taste follows up the nose perfectly. It's less than assertive at first, with some really pleasant floral notes. Mid-palate a bit more citrus comes in - oranges and maybe some pomegranate. An underscore of dank weed comes in here, sort of grounding everything. The dankness becomes more noticeable on later sips, and starts to mix in with a minty flavor, with more herbs than just weed. Finish is delicate, with a moderate amount of grapefruity bitterness. Aftertaste is dank and orange, along with a bit of sugar cookie malt.

Mouthfeel is fairly light-bodied with a moderate-high amount of creamy carbonation.

Overall, this is an amazing beer. A stunning range of hop flavors, all while being amazingly drinkable. It's so delicate, but still manages to satisfy your hop cravings, and it gives you pretty amazing hop burps. This is most definitely a new favorite!!

@ Wicked Weed and Growler

Brassy gold with a sticky white head that leaves behind lacing in sheets. Aroma is fresh, grassy, herbal, and spicy with some pineapple, pine sap, and pale cracker malts. First sip is a wave of spicy, herbal, dank, oily hops...just a big handful of fresh pellets. Crisp grassiness turns to melons and pulpy grapefruit juice. Hardly any malt to be found. HIghly attenuated, snappy, and dangerously refreshing. Drinks like 5%. Super good!

Overall a very drinkable IPA. However, In my opinion if they scaled back on the malt bill it would result in a much more enjoyable beer. Why are they hiding all of those delicious hops behind so much malt? WHY???

"Hops are a wicked and pernicious weed": That statement rang so true with the brewers of Wicked Weed that they built their brewery around the meaning of those words. And now a beer is born of those words and promise to captivate the palate in the only way that that's fitting for such brewery.

Pernicious IPA pours like any well-respecting IPA would- hazy gold with hints of amber and a billowing white head. A deep and aromatic perfume swells upward with citrus, herb, grass and pine. Its early taste is short-lived with honey, caramel and a faint biscuity nod.

But with the sweetness dissolving effortlessly across the middle, its light starchy malt character remains to embrace and uphold the hops to come. Bold pink grapefruit, lemon, lime, pineapple, gooseberry and bitter orange all align on the middle palate and take full command of the taste. Trailing bitterness grows to dominate the late palate with a grassy, herbal and perfumy taste that's eerily remiss of cannabis and chive.

Outlasting it all is a deeply resinous pine-like bitterness that sticky and sappy. As those notions of cannabis roll on, the medium-light bodied IPA finishes dry, bitter and unapologetically earthy. Save for the best Thai cuisine- this beer is built for bright and spicy foods.

a huge thanks to wcu80 for sending this my way in a very special box of beers from the southeast. a legend of a BA he is, and i sure appreciate getting the opportunity to taste one of my first wicked weed beers that isnt a sour. thanks man! this is a cool beer, really light on the malt side. looks and smells and tastes like pilsener malt. soft and delicate looking, there is a big bone white pillowy head on top, and just enough haze for a hoppy beer to have. the hops are awesome, seems like citra or something out in front, but there are several strains in this one. lovely and fresh, i taste pineapple and lemon zest, fruity without being sweet, delicious. the grain is suitably light to let the subtleties and nuances of the hops show through, and i really appreciate that. its dry as can be, and carbonated well. i still get a little of the resinous hop feel, but this is an awfully clean brew. im shocked (and a little disappointed) its as strong as it is. it tastes like 5%, drinks even lighter, and frankly would make a heck of a summer slammer if it wasnt quite this strong. they hide it well. nicely done here by wicked weed, it seems they are as good at the hoppy stuff as they are at the wild ones. thanks again wcu80 for this!

L- light golden, semi hazy, tempting ipa
S- very fruity, mostly pineapple with some sweet hoppiness. I get a slight orange smell.
T- this is my favorite tasting beer, bar none. Wicked weed hit the bullseye on this. It is initially fruity with pineapple/tangerine to begin. Then i taste the beery, malty flavors with perfect, slight bitterness on the finish. It is just delicious.
F- surprisingly light. Goes great with dinner or by itself. Could drink a few if it werent for the abv (and the price: $9/4pk)
Overall this is the prime example of what beer should be, and just about the best ipa that money can buy. If i could afford to pay the $9 per 4pk or the $12/6pk of cans that is available here in the triad in NC, this would be all I drink. Until then, this is the best beer for celebrations or when I really need a dang good beer. Cheers!

Bottle. Pored into glass. Resiny and dry. Very well carbonated and excellent lacing. Clear and pale color when poured. Lingering bitterness is a good thing. Would love see on tap somewhere in ATL area.

This is a premium IPA. In this beer town (Asheville, NC), it is a class of one, and most local craft beer lovers would reach for it first, if it didn't command its premium pricing for its 4 packs of bottles. We usually reserve it for special occasions like a big promotion, a wedding, or a friend needing to know we love them.

I find it amazing that it can have such beautiful grapefruit/pineapple/pine hoppiness, while avoiding the syrupy maltiness of many other American IPAs. I know that the thick heaviness may be appreciated by some, but not by me!

Pernicious is flavorful, light, crisp, and never bitter. It is the kind of beer you could drink all night and never get tired of, if it wasn't for the alcohol content.

Definitely one of the best IPAs I've ever had!

Thanks to nc41 for this one from his box in NBS BIF #8. 12oz bottle poured into 16oz Budweiser goblet (hey, it was the best thing available where I was house-sitting!). Poured a hazy straw yellow color with 3/4 inch of of white head that had good retention and moderate lacing.

The aroma was mostly hops, grapefruit and some floral, with a very low malt presence. very similar on the tongue, all hops with no counterbalancing grains.

The body was just on the thin side of medium, fairly typical and had a dry finish. Drinkability was fine, as are most examples of the style. Overall, a fairly typical example of the style, worth trying if you see it.

Again thanks to rudzud.

Pours a nice foamy 1 finger head fades slowly, nice sticky lacing, crystal clear golden yellow color.

Nose is pretty nice, big fruity hops, fruity bubblegum with mild tropical notes, nice Amarillo at first, then pineapple, into a mild pine sap grassy note, little candied orange peel, musty dank pine takes over.

Taste brings more Amarillo out front, juicy fruit, fruity bubblegum, mild grassy, floral fresh hop flavor, into a mild musty character, faint grassy pine in the background, fair bitterness, fair malt sweetness and candy taste. Late a big piney earthy herbal pinesol thing late, unfortunately. Finish dry slightly sticky, quite bitter, little pinesol, musty, etc.

Mouth is med bod little fluffy thicker feel, no real booze, nice fluffy carb.

Overall mixed, nice Amarillo, nice malt, booze hidden fairly well, but the mosaic like musty earthy grassy pinesol thing takes away from it. The malt profile and initial hop reminds me a lot of Brew Dog ipas.

Pours a mostly clear bright golden color with 2 fingers of head whiter than the 2017 GOP. The head settles into a thin film, leaving a ton of lacing as it goes. Gorgeous looking beer.

The aroma is relatively faint, but nicely balanced. There are notes of candied orange and bitter pine, with a sweet malt backbone.

The taste brings lots of sweet citrus, with some notes of peach and mango. There's a solid malt backbone before a bitter pine finish.

The feel is medium bodied with hefty carbonation. Crisp and decently refreshing.

Overall, a pretty solid IPA. It's incredibly bland, but it's tasty and highly drinkable, not to mention well-balanced. Would drink again.

Terrific example of a classic IPA... bitterness included...

Pineapple and citrus hops... well balanced with a strong malt backbone that is happy to be the lesser player and allows that bitter citrus character to shine here...

I would reach for this consistently as an everyday sort of IPA. Its tasty and not one that I would grow weary of

First had in February 2015 from growler fill, as a one-off known as "East Side or Die IPA." It was clearly better than the already-outstanding Freak of Nature. Pleased the brewery renamed it "Pernicious," and designated this beer as its regular IPA. When traveling through North Carolina, fill a growler.

The clear golden colored beer pours out into a Duvel glass with a 1 1/4" fluffy white head that recedes slowly but visibly leaving lots of lacing on the sides of the glass. Sipping creates lots of small scattered patches and legs of lacing. By mid-way through the beer there is a layer of foam on the surface and most of the sides of the glass are still coated with lots of lacing.

The aromas are all about the hops with almost no malt showing. There's some lemony citrus and a touch of pine. There's some tropical fruit character that is mostly a lot like grapefruit.

The flavors are much as expected from the nose with the lemony citrus and pine all mingled with some tropical fruit notes from the pineapple. The noticeable bitterness is there but well controlled and complimenting rather than interfering with the other flavors.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and fairly smooth with the light, fine persistent carbonation. The finish begins as the fruit flavors begin to recede leaving the moderate, slightly spicy bitterness to slide to a clean, dry and quite nice ending in the back of the palate.

On the whole this is a very well made beer and one I'd be more than happy to have again in the future. It's an excellent example of a hop focused IPA that blends multiple flavors into a complete and enjoyable package.
