Bramble Barrel is an American sour ale inspired by the Gin Bramble cocktail. This beer was brewed with a pound and a half per gallon of local blackberries and aged in NC made Cardinal Gin barrels. Finished with fresh lemon zest.

500mL bottle purchased at brewery in August 2019. Poured into Trillium Six States glass. FWIW, the bottle says 8.6% ABV.

L: Light, slightly pinkish head, maybe 1/2 F. Leaves a thin ring and no lacing. Beer is golden with a pinkish hue.

S: Blackberries first, zesty lemons second, and a definite whiff of the gin barrel with a juniper push. I generally am not a fan of beers that try to do something with gin, but let's throw it into bed with Madonna and see if she sleeps with it.

T: Well...it's pretty good. Berries hard up front with zesty lemon and basically we are looking at the blackberry lemonade they sell at the Biltmore food mall. But then we get solid notes of juniper and the gin barrel and it actually does give it a bit of a grown-up mellow kick and adds to the taste experience rather than diverts. Finishes a tad sour from the lemon zest and the gin lingers a bit as well and there's the oily gin aftertaste thing I feared. But it's tiny.

F: Lightish body, fairly aggressive carbonation that dries and crisps the aftertaste. Pretty refreshing and drinkable for the ABV. Flavors meld nicely together and it is well balanced.

O: They did a really nice job here, and I needed some convincing.

Dark hazy reddish-brownish-purple with a loud, fizzy white pastel purple head that quickly dies like soda carbonation.

Smell is light char and barrel that is spritzed up by bright and botanical notes paired with lemon zest and fresh blackberry juice.

Taste is herbal, tart and sour with a clear gin barrel influence accented by blackberry and lemon, light charred cherry, and a hint of Sprite.

Bouncy, bubbly, crisp and effervescent with a semi-dry finish.

Bottle shared at home. Clear dark-ruby pour with a thin pink head with decent retention. Smells like blackberries, strawberries, bubblegum, vanilla, oak. The taste notes include blackberries, oak, quite strong pine resin / rosemary, lemon zest, mint, gin. A very nice combination of sour and barrel-aging components. Medium tartness, medium carbonation, medium mouthfeel, overall quite balanced.
