Pours into an impy nonic a deep dark chocolate brown with a large blooming two finger deep beige head atop that settles ever so slowly leaving broken chunks of lace behind.Big piney hops and dark chocolate in the nose with neither winning out wich makes for an awesome aroma.Thise resinous hops are omni present everywhere it's all over the palate and nose, mixed with chocolate and roast it makes for a a great mix.

Pours near black with a modest beige head. Good steaks of lace on the glass.

If I were blindfolded, I would think this is a regular IPA as there are no notable darker malt aromas. I do get pale malt sweetness along with the typical floral to peppery hop nose.

There are some dark chocolate flavors on the initial sip. It reminds me a bit like burnt toast. The bitterness is ever present but on the mild side. The aftertaste is reminiscent of black coffee. Body leans thin while the carbonation leans high.

If the test of black IPA is to promote the hop aspects in a much gradeur fashion much more than they do the over-bearing malty aspects, then an IPA wins out over that of porter. And when aspirations of imperialized black IPA come calling, that task gets much harder.

Iron Lady commands a patient pour, layering with arid structures of froth, lacing legendarily and casting aspirations of coffee, tropical fruit, citrus and herb with a mere whiff. Underneath that lies an understated sweetness of bittersweet chocolate, coffee latte, light cream and vanilla.

But all that subtlety is quickly cast aside as the middle palate is all about the arid toast and the domineering hops. Pineapple, passionfruit, guava and kiwi glide above the toasty taste of fresh columbian coffee, cocoa and bitter walnut oils. Grapefruit bleeds into the mix along with blood orange and torn pine needles- all seemingly seared by fire and trailing with a tinge of char.

Medium-full, the beer should accept criticism for such lack of dryness, yet its utmost bitterness, and char work together for a tandem of sharpness that neither can claim separately. With that revelation, the starchy, malty, and caramelized weight is easily excusable en route to a bittersweet finish with echoes of citrus and chocolate.

Aroma is chocolatey and roast malt dominant, with floral and dank, resiny, piney notes, along with sharp grapefruit.

Flavor is more hop prevalent, opening with grapefruit, becoming resiny and piney mid palate, and finishing earthy and moderately bitter. Roast malt complements the earthiness well, and helps highlight the citrus dominance.

"The Iron Lady is the vanguard of dank and dark seas. Her Imperial voyage raises waves of black malts leaving a resinous hop finish in her bold wake. Her heady bow and imposing gravity demolish all thinner black brews who shudder at her might. The depths belong to the Iron Lady's steel reign." Brewed in the style of an American Black Ale, available in 16.9 oz. bottles and on rotating draft.

Poured from a 16.9 oz. bottle to a tulip glass.

(Appearance) Pours a smooth, creamy rich chocolate brown head over an inky black body. Retention is very good and lacing is light and patchy. 4.5

(Smell) Black patent and chocolate malt body with a mild bitterness and high cleanliness, with undertones of pine, fruit and citrus hops with a mild bitterness. Rich with density, yet straightforward aroma. Potency is moderate. 3.75

(Taste) Rich chocolate and moderately roasted malt body with more roast quality than acrid black patent malt bitterness. Finish is lightly bitter with a touch of citrus and pine hop flavor, a subtle nod to what is expected per the style. Very drinkable, solid and enjoyable malt body and a present, if not overly pronounced hop finish. 4

(Mouthfeel) Texture is moderately creamy, smooth, lightly chewy, mildly dry. Carbonation is mild, generating a soft frothiness and a mildly crisp finish. Body is medium+ for the style, medium/heavy overall. Balance is slightly hoppy and roasted bitter over sweet. Alcohol presence is light and there are no off characters. 4.25

(Overall) A straightforward, no-frills Black IPA with a solid, rich malt body, more stout-like in density and delivery than anticipated, but an ever present, enjoyable citrusy and piney hop flavor and bitterness that comes close to dueling the malt richness, for a beer that delivers on-par for the style, yet equally rebellious with an enjoyable spin on Black IPA conventions. Solid value buy for an all-around solid Wicked Weed beer, as usual. 4

Another week, another new WW beer. Not complaining at all, of course, just making an observation. The way these guys pump out excellent beers feels pretty damn unparalleled in the modern craft scene, not gonna lie. At 9.5%, this black IPA is certainly not a wimpy beer, and, luckily, it's of incredibly high quality to boot.

Pours a very dark (bordering pure black motor oil) color, with some incredibly deep-brown hues noticeable if the glass is tilted in the beer is held up to light. A very tight, small and sheepish khaki-colored head sits atop the beer, gathering a small group of densely-packed bubbles in the center of my glass, as the sticky lace spreads cobwebs along the inside walls. Very nice pour, and each small additional pour out of the 16.9 oz bottle (awesome format for this style and ABV, by the way) builds up some slightly-more-sinister foam that bubbles away evenly.

Nose is intensely complex with notes ranging from almond liqueur to roasted espresso beans to tobacco and earthy aspects, all the way to citrus peel and light guava and even something reminding me of honeydew melon. Wow, this is chock full of character. The slight sniff of ethanol I get in here really feels under-par for a 9.5% monster of a black IPA, and I am very impressed with that. Usually with these kinds of beers, the ethanol can get a bit harsh and feed of the roast profile and oily hop elements in a negative way, but this smells very smooth.

On the tongue, this is much more chocolate-y than I initially assumed it'd be, with big notes of chocolate-covered nuts and caffè mocha combining with distinct pineapple, chalky yeast, tobacco and dank grassy notes. So different than the nose; much less tropical and juicy but biased more towards the charred/ashy malt flavors. What a weird, yet strangely satisfying transition.

Feel is pretty much medium-heavy with a solid roast profile, slightly oil-biased backend and adequate (read: low-medium) carbonation. Really like the way this sits on the tongue, and the bitterness in the finish is nuanced and long-lasting. Once again, another huge win for Wicked Weed. I'm not surprised at all, and I'll be getting another bottle or two of this bad boy soon enough!

Fine dark body; thin yet sticky light tan head. Gentle spicy, citric scents. American IPA taste with an underlying black malt backbone. Medium-heavy body; carbonation tickling the palate.

A fair black IPA, nicely balanced but not exceptional in any way, shape, fashion or form. The body color is excellent yet the head is weak and wispy; the odor comes across fairly subdued, and the body is just okay. The flavor brings things up a notch yet doesn't stand out in any particular fashion. Good yet unassuming...

500mL bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 6.49. Bottled 1/11/16. Served in a Wicked Weed snifter.

Pours black with two full fingers of khaki head which fades to a thin layer of milky froth and a bubbly belt, leaving some considerable drapes of lace.

Aromas of pine, chocolate, bright citrus and caramel. A fragrant balance of roasty malts and hops.

Flavors of orange peel, pine, chocolate, muted caramel macchiato, kilned malts, berry seeds, cereal and a slight alcohol burn. As in the nose the taste does well in balancing aspects of imperial IPA and stout. Delicious.

Medium full feel, somewhere between oily and creamy with pillowy smooth but present carbonation. Bittersweet, lingering finish with chocolate orange, roast coffee and a little caramel.

Wicked Weed has brewed an all around fantastic American black ale. Iron Lady is an all around excellent experience from the beautiful pour and sweet, welcoming nose to the deft blend of chocolatey, roasty malts and citrusy, piney lupulin delivered via a rich, full body.

Poured into a Dogfish traditional oversized snifter. Label says Bottled On: 01.11.16.

A- Pours a mostly opaque black color with a 1/2 inch dark tan head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of sheer surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a broken ring behind.

S- Musty aroma of roasty malt and earthy hops almost turns it into a sort of rubbery smell.

T- Cohesive flavor of roastiness, hop flavor and bitterness. There's also some smoky quality to it that was unexpected and the bit of sweetness that's there balances things out quite nicely. Very easy to drink for the ABV. The hop flavor is decidedly earthy.

M- Slightly sharp with medium carbonation and a fullish body.

O- Definitely more of an American Black Ale than what one would think of when picturing a "Black IPA" since the flavors are so seamlessly well integrated.

Had on draft at WoB in Raleigh, served in a tulip glass, the deep black color and thin tan head noted for the style. Smell was not that of an IPA, actually reminded me of a Belgian, but the taste was typical Wicked Weed, which, as all their brews of this style, was amazing! Nice notes of dark malt hid the 9.5% abv very well. Will most definitely have this again!!
Update- picked up a bomber and have to amend the note on the smell with the bottle, it was defintely WW DIPAish, dare I say, almost "Freakish"....still an awesome beverage!!
